Wedding Woes

First Dance

Okay so I don't know if it's a woe, but you're all blunt and I'm honestly curious. My FI and picked out a first dance song, but when my bridesmaids listened to it, one of them was a little less than enthusiastic and mentioned that it may bother some people. I've also posted this in the music thread:

We're thinking of using "Smother Me" by the Used as our first dance song. My FI and I have been together for almost 7 years now and this song has always been very special to us, but in the back of my mind I'm a little bit worried about what some of our more traditional guests, like grandparents, might think. Should I consider their opinions when choosing a song, or should I just go with what we like?

You can listen to the song on YouTube here.

I just think a 4-minute song is looooooong, when no one else really cares and they're just waiting for the required dances to be over so they can start enjoying themselves.

The title made me think it was about some kind of domestic violence, but I read the lyrics, and it's just borderline creepy. And if it's not creepy to you, then go for it.

  • I think it's borderline creepy.

But, if that's what you want to do, just do it.  I can say that unless you're doing a choreographed routine, I'm probably not paying that much attention to the first dance and certainly not the words (unless you've packed a classic like At Last or something).
  • You get to choose.  I don't pay that much attention to the music at the couple's first dance.  I was once at a wedding where the first dance was to Whitney Houston's version of "I will Always Love You" - which is really a break up song.  You do you.

  • Someone once told us they were using Love The Way You Lie.  You're good.

I didn't think of wedding when I listened to your song, but who cares?

DH and I used a non-traditional wedding song by our favorite band.

when you ask people for their opinions, you're going to get their opinions, regardless if you agree with them.

of course, i imagine it came on the radio or whatever the kids are listening to music on these days, and you were all, "this is my song! what do you think?' in a casual way, but you gave someone an opportunity to say what they thought of the song in the context of a first dance.

that said, dance to whichever song you want to dance to. i don't understand why it matters what other people think when you and your FI have to have the memory and want to choose a meaningful song. if it matters to someone else who is not dancing with you to it, then maybe the song isn't that important to you.
