Wedding Woes

That Catholic doubts thread is rubbing me the wrong way.

And I know it's me, because the response being about the church's perspective is totally in keeping with the question about trying to get married in the church, but I'm irked to the point of checking my colon about the poster who says that if you were baptized catholic, then you're catholic no matter what you do or believe, because the catholics say so and they're the final word on your religion.

  • Oh, I took it that she's saying that's what the Church believes, not what actual people believe. It *is* what the Church believes.

I told her to skip the whole thing. Darth Pope can DIAF. Soon, preferably.

  • I saw that.

I guess I'm just supremely annoyed that it's the church's stance that they know what religion you are, if any, better than you do.  If the church had a face, I'd punch it.

  • Get in line. :D

  • i don't understand why you would want to get married in a catholic church if you (and/or your spouse) was not a practicing catholic, unless you didn't care either way and were doing it to keep the family happy.
  • Keeping the family happy, or "that's just how I always imagined it" - it's hard to say which it is.

  • I just want to clarify that I am Catholic and am practicing according the church. My fiance' doesn't consider himself Catholic at all. However the church and our priest views him as Catholic because he was baptized Catholic. He honestly is a really nice and passive person, so he doesn't really care. He considers himself agnostic. He has already agreed to have our kids batpized and everything since he knows it's important to me and he has no negative view on it at all.

I don't really agree with this since I don't really consider him Catholic, but I can't be too upset because then I probably wouldn't have been able to have my dream wedding in the Church I grew up in. I'm not having a wedding in the Catholic Church to appease anyone. It's been my dream.

Just wanted to clarify on that.
  • Catlover, it wasn't a problem I had with you, just a problem with the church.

I'll just throw in that I went from being raised Catholic to being agnostic to being a pretty staunch atheist.

At some point in that progression, I probably would have agreed to have my kids baptized if my spouse wanted to, but at this point, I absolutely would not. I don't think he's lying to you about it now, but know that his feelings on the matter might change (in either direction, of course).

I guess I don't much care what the Catholic church thinks about my status. It's just like citizenships. If I'm born in America, I"m an American citizen, even if I eventually self-identify some other way. I'd have to actively get rid of my citizenship to get off of the official rolls, if you will. The Church is the same way. (Which, yes, is part of what makes it bad, imo.)
