Wedding Woes

wedding guests

One of the other attendees is a different friend from graduate school. I love this girl, but she is what I would call 'a hot mess.' She has OCD. It pretty much ruins her life. She is hours late to everything, because she can't just...say....put on her shoes. It is a whole process.

My first thought was, 'Why doesn't she start getting ready sooner?' After seeing her in action, I don't think it would help. She pretty much made me crazy evrytime we went anywhere together.

This includes another wedding we went to....She was running pretty well on time for that gig. But, as always, she did her makeup in the car and went straight to the bathroom to do her makeup. If you were in downtown Dallas in the 2000's, you probably saw her in the bathroom, finishing getting ready. I was the blonde on the dance floor.

OK, so back to making me insane. One day we went to her apartment to pick her up to go out. She answers the door in a towel and the proceeds TO GET BACK IN THE SHOWER. I went to her fridge and just started drinking her beer. I was pissed.

Then she goes on and on and on getting ready. Finally she comes out with a few pairs of shoes and asks everyone which ones she should wear. In my head I was thinking, "Which ever ones will get your fatass to the car the fastest." but I didn't say that.

Later I was talking to a mutual friend about it and I was pissed. Because I had sacrificed things I wanted to do that day in order to be ready on time. I said, "I could have been vacuuming." And there is where my OCD comes into it.

It'll be interesting to see her again. I saw pictures of her at another friends wedding and she has gained weight. She didn't look very put together, either.

I have more on her for another post.

girl, you know better.  this is like telling a heroin addict to 'stop it' or telling a depressed person to "smile."

At the time, I really didn't know better.

But this also goes to show, you can't put two people with the same problem together and expect everything to be fine.

Her OCD and mine went against each other. I have my own rituals, but the end result is always be there on time. I bet a thousandty dollars she shows up to the wedding with wet hair and her makeup half done.

    And she hasn't gotten help?

Why get help when she has a perfectly good enabler? Her father enabled her when she was in school (paying for everything, so there wasn't the consequence of job loss for her, as she didn't work) and now her boyfriend takes care of her. I wish I had an awesome awesome enabler.

I have a friend/coworker like this and she is able to keep it in control as long as she has little or no other stress in her life.   So every now and then, she would be hours late to work, or just couldn't make any commitments for doing anything together because she knew she'd be late to whatever she had planned.   And I knew what was going on but nobody else did.
Medication helped a little, but behavior modification is what helped the most.   But. like I said, when she was stressed the behavior mod tricks went right out the window.
She actually taught me a lot about how to handle my little quirks and OCD-like habits.
