Wedding Woes

I have a registry question

Do people not register for china and crystal anymore?  We recently went to one wedding and have two more coming up in the next month, and none of the couples registered for china or crystal.  Is this a coincidence, or a trend?

I am starting to feel hopelessly old-fashioned, with my sweater sets and china.  Don't even get me started on thank you notes.  I need to start carrying old lady hard candy in my purse:  root beer barrels, and those blue mints.

I do think people are trending away from the fine china.
  • Meh.  People don't really register for that...they might register for stoneware, but not china.  But you can always gift nice things...I'd rather have gotten something nice that wasn't on the registry than something random someone picked not on the registry.

  • I don't think they do. I didn't.  We have H's mother's wedding china and as pretty as they were I just couldn't justify registering for a set that would rarely get used or displayed.

  • my doctor friend registered for china, but not crystal. she does have some barware on her registry. The china is very simple pattern in white.

i think she and her Fi (also a doctor) plan to entertain a lot.

i teased her about all of the high end kitchen tools/cookware on her registry since neither of them cooks. "i guess you need the professional quality eqipment since you'll be hiring a personal chef..."
  • I really considered it b/c we do entertain frequently, but it just wasn't worth it.  Plus, we didn't have the storage space for it.

Besides, if I ever really wanted it, I know my grandmother's china is mine and she'd probably gladly hand it over now.  B/c she's tired of storing it too.

I didn't--I didn't even register for 'stoneware' type, I was indiffernt and didn't care and don't entertain.
  • So then I have a dumb question:  do the everyday dishes do double duty for formal entertaining, or are all of your gatherings casual?  I know, it sounds dumb, but I'm wondering anyway.
  • We registered for china and crystal, and were disappointed when we realized our friends who are also getting married didn't. (Ok, I was disappointed, I'm sure fi didn't care). I think people are going with less formal as well as more practical, particularly younger couples who really haven't established a household much beyond the dishes they had in college (which I just boxed up to give to my younger brother, so excited!)

my everydays do double duty.  i have apilco tradition (white porcelain), and i dress it up with my more formal flatware and stemmed glassware.  i also pull out the good serveware -- my ironstone platters, hand-painted bowls -- and the good crisp linens.

for more casual dinners, it's the target linens, the wood handled flatware, and the picardie tumblers.

    everyday dishes for everything.
(and I can't think of the last time anything was 'formal' for my family.)

I registered for china and crystal, but I know I'm in the minority of young couples these days. I don't think I'll get much of it, but it's something I'd like to collect over the next few years. Don't let other peoples' opinions influence what you register for. Someday you may really want it, and it's expensive to buy all at once. Besides, older people seem to like buying china. I say if you really want it, register for it!

  • This makes me really sad.  I really want to register for china.  But I'm a weirdo who gets excited by nice dishes.

See, I knew it, I'm officially old.  I need to see about getting some bifocals, and a little chain to wear them on.

  • I love plain white dishes b/c I like "plating" as a verb.  I want the food to be the star, not my design.  I love getting a plate of food that looks incredibly awesome to eat.  Dressed up/down by glassware, centerpieces and linens as appropriate.
  • We don't even have a table, so I don't see us obtaining dishes. Our house is too small for such niceties.

  • When we registered at Bed Bath Beyond the registry coordinator there was putting on heavy pressure for us to register for china, at least a casual set.  She got out a HUGE book with all the different styles and patterns and whatnot and wanted us to flag ones we liked.  I think my FI was just about ready to shoot himself.  We do not even have a kitchen or dining room table, we live in an apartment and would have nowhere to store it, and we don't host any dinners so it just seems pointless for us.  That woman even called me about 3 weeks after we were in the store and once again brought up china.  It was pretty obnoxious.  I know other young couples who have china though, but they actually cook a lot and host dinners and holidays at their place so for some people it makes sense.

We registered  for both. I got chastized about it, but I don't care, it's something I want, but will never buy myself.
