Wedding Woes

My fianceé just got layed off... :'(

My boyfriend had been nervous about recent lay-offs in his work team, and sadly he received a letter. I've tried to be there for him as much as I can, but I know that, like any guy that values his financial independence, this has truly been a blow to him, well, to the both of us. I've tried to be positive about it, but I'm certainly feeling uneasy about the wedding, being only 8 months away. I have faith that he will find another job, but it's difficult to think that our dreams of being together might have to be put on hold. I just needed to share this here. Maybe somebody is going through the same thing...

  • I'm so sorry to hear that. Everything will work out in the end.

  • My H was laid off 2x last year - the first time he found something in 8-9 weeks, the 2nd time in a week and a half. A lot of people are not that fortunate.

I'm sure it was a blow to your FI, and he's dealing with the emotional side as well as trying to find a new job. The only advice that I can give is for you to support him in any way possible, and be realistic about the situation.

I'm not sure if you are living together/sharing expenses, how you are planning to pay for the wedding, etc. I would suggest that you come up with a budget that is workable long term. You need to prioritize needs vs. wants. (i.e. housing/food/utilities/transportation/savings etc. trumps cable/cell phone/date nights/vacations/wedding) Unfortunately you may need to put off the wedding or scale back on your plans until your FI is working again. Even if you have money in savings to pay for the wedding, a prolonged layoff could start eating into that stash.

It sucks that this happened to your FI  - good luck to both of you.
