Wedding Woes

Possibly flameworthy question

Is it just me, or do a lot of really rural people just look...odd?  Oddly proportioned faces (eyes really wide or close together, really big ears, huge foreheads), gangly, you name it.

I'm not trying to be unkind, but I've definitely noticed this while visiting the middle of nowhere where DH's mom's family lived, middle of nowhere in another state where his dad lives, and the Walmart [shudder] by work.  The last is more like on the fringe of the exurbs, but it's the closest Walmart to many tiny rural communities, so it draws them from far and wide.

My best guess is a lack of genetic diversity, but I'm open to other theories.  Just to reiterate, I'm not saying that they fail to meet some arbitrary standard of beauty, I'm saying if you took their physical measurements, many of them would have at least one feature that's a couple of standard deviations away from average.

(I texted DH about this, but all he did was ask if I was calling him odd looking, so I had to tell him only in the sense that's he's unusually handsome.)

  • I think this is true. I notice it quite a bit at places like Disney World.

    do "country folk" look inbred?

    yes.
  • Yes.

I can tell when we go to Arkansas and people look at ME like I'm the funny looking one.

  • I'm also thinking it's a lack of genetic diversity. Not necessarily inbreeding, but definitely diving into the same gene pool a few too many times.

A point of note: DH's grandfather and grandmother are third cousins. A little creepy for my taste, but we were already married when I found this out.

  • I think it's a combo of genetics and lack of proper pre-natal care/nutrition.

I think some of it is a 'standard of beauty' thing...inasmuch that the priorities are different and what's acceptable is sometimes different.

I mean, people joke about people in the UK having bad teeth but...weird teeth are, from what I've seen, treated as something quirky/acceptable there.  Less so here.  I think some of the more rural areas accept more weirdnesses.

When I moved to BFE I asked my mom not to let me look like "them."  When 30 mins to the next town is a major undertaking you don't get a big gene pool.

If you really want an inbred look, go to Amishland.
