WDYT: Teacher on admin leave

http://www.indystar.com/article/20130220/NEWS/302200101/Indiana-teacher-who-supported-banning-gays-from-prom-placed-administrative-leave?gcheck=1&nclick_check=1

I don't agree with this teacher at all.

But I don't think anyone threatening anyone is appropriate.  She has the right to her opinions and I think she even has the right to voice them outside of school.  I hope it settles down so that she can get back to her career.

When I think of this teacher, I think of the teacher who stood up in our City Council meeting and talked about how she allowed bullied students, the majority of whom were gay or perceived to be gay, to eat lunch in her classroom so that they would feel safe.  I hope there are more teachers like my local one, than this lady.

  • When you go public with a controversial view point, you can expect a controversial reaction. She made her bed, now she gets to sleep in it.

IndyStar sucks now they went to pay-for-content scheme.
  • Oop, sorry.  I had it come through another article, so maybe that's why it didn't do that to me.
  • To be clear, she was put on leave because other people are threatening her?  I hate what she said.  At the same time, if I had to stay home from work because someone else threatened me I'd be irate.  In fact I did have someone threaten me and I felt better at work.

If she was put on leave for what she said that's different.

  • Also, when she says we and us, who is she referencing?  If she said this as a school rep then she most certainly be put on leave.
  • My understanding is that she said it on her own time, and that security has been added at the schools b/c of "threats".  It doesn't specify who/what, but they put the person at the center of the controversy on leave.

I'm just really tired of people threatening, on both sides, violence if they don't get their way.
  • I think that gay teens have enough to deal with without discovering that they're hated by the teachers who are supposed to be making them feel safe and supported, and homophobic teens should not be getting validation. It's no different than a teacher making racist remarks. They should be disciplined accordingly. Teachers must be held to a certain standard because of the impact they have on young people. If they're racist or homophobic, they have the right to that opinion, but voicing it could be incredibly harmful and they should be pushed to think about someone other than themselves before saying things about it.
