Transportation question

Hello,

My fiancé and I are getting married in 8 months.  We almost have a reception venue picked out and are deciding between two places.   The only “con” for one of the places is that it is 30 minutes away from the hotel our guests will be staying at.  About 95% of our wedding guests will be coming from another state so we want to make this as convenient for them as possible.  We will be providing transportation to and from the wedding and reception.  So my question is… even if we are providing transportation, is 30 minutes too long of a drive to and from the wedding?  Especially at the end of the reception… will our guests be falling asleep in the limos? I would appreciate anyone’s opinions on the subject.

Thank you!

Heidi

People drive further than 30 mins one way to work everyday. A 30 min drive between ceremony and reception destinations is perfectly acceptable and quite common. Anything longer than 45 mins though is considered questionable, and those who want to be there will. If someone complains about a 30 min drive, they are best to just stay home.

I think 30 mins is fine, especially if you provide transportation

I think it's acceptable, especially if you are thoughtful enough to provide transportation. This, to me, is less annoying than 30 min. travel time between the ceremony and the reception. If your guests had to travel between those places too, I would say this is too much.

Can you have the reception at the hotel where all of your guests will be staying?  That's what we did - we provided transport to the ceremony and back to the hotel - and it's incredibly convenient.  When the guests are ready to "go home" from the reception, they just have to walk to their rooms.  Easy-peasy ;)

Great idea ExpatPumpkin!  We originally wanted to have the reception at the hotel, but all of the area hotels cost too much. :-(  Oh well!  Thanks for all of your input!

I probably wouldn't be that keen on making the drive myself but if you are providing transportation I think it's fine!

I wouldn't be too thrilled about telling my guests to get in their cars (especially in a city they don't live in) and drive 30 minutes to a hotel at the end of the night.  But if you offer transportation for them, it's fine.  You could do limos or a party bus, and they could have a bit of an afterparty on the way back.

You'll probably need to do a couple of early runs during the reception, also.  If people are coming with kids or there are older guests, they may not make it all night.

It's been my experience that when a lot of the guests are staying at a hotel, there will be an afterparty somewhere at the hotel late into the evening.

I think it also depends what time of day your reception is.  If it's from 4-9, people won't be exhausted yet.  If it's from 8-1 in the morning, they could potentially fall asleep on the ride, but I still wouldn't mind, as long as it was provided.  That's very generous of you to provide 30 minute transportation, I'm sure it can't be cheap!

I went to a wedding with the almost exact same thing.  They provided transportation and it worked out fine.  I would have liked to have been able to stay somewhere closer to the reception, but the only places to stay were run down motels, so we had to take the 30 min ride.  We did all fall asleep on the ride home, but most of us drove 5 hours that day just to get up there.  I think it is fine as long as you provide the transportation.

My cousin's venue (ceremony and reception site in one) was about 30-40 minutes away from the hotels.  The buses were running the entire length of the reception (was back about every 45 minutes or so)  Everyone just partied in the bus and then went back to the hotels and partied more because there was a night club in the casino, others went to the casino, etc.  So, 30-40 minutes is completely fine!! (even if your hotels didn't have those extra amenities)!  So I think as long as the transportation was continually going you'll be fine

Our wedding & reception are at the same location, but about 40 minutes from  where most of our friends and family live. We're also keeping alcohol at the reception to a comfortable minimum as my fiance & I don't drink anymore, and I'd hate to worry about our guests driving home after a long night of champagne toasts.
Solution: We're hiring out a trolley from the limo service to bring our guests from a designated pub to the wedding site & then home after the reception. It'll seat about 40 people, and picking up from a pub (who will provide a drink special) allows time for our guests to mingle beforehand. The classic trolley fits so perfectly with our retro theme, will be great for pictures, and will save a bundle vs several limos.

I think it's incredibly thoughtful of you to offer transportation for your guests, and I think it's more than okay to do this. A 30-minute drive is totally acceptable especially since you're offering transportation for your guests.

I think this all depends on where you live.  If you live in a rural area like me then it takes about thirty minutes to get any where anyway!  I don't see the big deal though, like someone else said the people who want to attend will.

I know you've already gotten a lot of feedback, but I'm chiming in anyway!

Our reception & ceremony are about 35 minutes from the hotels as well, but again this was the closest option!  We are providing buses for our guests, shuttling all night.  One even has a bathroom!!
    Congratulations and good luck!!
