Reception Surprise for guests?

I am from the philadelphia/south jersey area and i was debating on looking into getting the Phillie Phanatic to show up at my reception.  Has anyone ever looked into or done this?  Thoughts?

We had the Michigan State Spartan mascot- Sparty- at DDs wedding and the guests loved it.  He was there for about an hour and danced and posed for tons of pictures.

ETA:  DD and SIL met at a MSU basketball game and are huge sports fans, as were the majority of the guests.
  • I'm sorry but it you are having a typical NJ wedding it's a no. It's cheezy

This screams" we are at my husband's 40th birthday party."  Sorry.  Just not appropriate for a wedding.  I had toyed with having Ben Franklin come to mine but there was no way I could make his appearance fit with a wedding (though his quotes were the theme).

I'd freaking love this.  But, I'm from Philly, love the Phillies, and think the Phanatic is best mascot to ever grace this earth.  Not everyone will feel that way.  I'd probably still highly consider it, though.  I think Sparty falls in line with the Phanatic if you're from Michigan (and Michigan State fans).

If it was any other mascot, then I'd have to agree with Hoboken and GLB.

EDIT: By the way, what's a typical NJ wedding, Hoboken?  I don't think there really is one.  There's a kind that's often associated with Northern NJ (as we all know, South Jersey is a different animal entirely), but that doesn't mean that ALL weddings in this state look the same.
  • H and I were considering hiring Poe the Raven's mascot for our cocktail hour but decided not to because we just didn't want to spend the extra money.  Looking back I wish we had because I think everyone would have loved it.  Oh and we also got married at Raven's stadium so it would have certainly made sense.

  • I know we love the Phillies to, as do the majority of our guests.  Everyone is from south jersey or philly.  That is the only reason why i was considering it.

  • My first inclination was no, but it sounds like people from your area have a different perspective on it.

For me personally, I'm not a huge sports or mascot fan to begin with. If I went to a wedding with a macot, I'd probably avoid them. But it's not poor etiquette or anything, and if your group would "get" it and love it, then I think it's fine.

  • Sounds like fun. Especially if you (and your guests) are big Phillies fans.

I had a friend who brough in some Mummers for her wedding.  It was so much fun.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • H & I considered this, but it was pretty expensive to have the Phanatic show up.  We chose instead to have our e-pics taken at the stadium.  We displayed these photos at the reception and our cake topper had H's peg doll wearing a Phillies shirt.  If I were at a wedding and the Phanatic showed up, I would love it!  And it would be memorable to me.
  • Coming from a family of diehard Phillies fans, my guests would love love love if the Phanatic showed up.  I say, if you think your guests would enjoy it, go for it!

It was a surprise for them.  The MOG and I arranged it and they had no idea it was going to happen.  They loved it.  The few wolverines in attendance were tolerant, but all the Spartans in the crowd had a great time.
  • Well, I'm not a fan of "surprises" at weddings, but that's me.  I just find them too cutesy.
  • I LOVE that idea!! I also was thinking of surprising FI with a visit from the Fanatic at our reception, but we are getting married during baseball season, so I'm not sure it would be possible. I am in the process of trying to see if Swoop is available, and what the cost is. If you do get the Phanatic, I would love to know what the process was to arrange the appearence.
