How to tell a bride that you can't afford to attend her wedding?

I was invited to a wedding that I just found out it going to be a very formal event for a co-worker at my previous job that I am not all that close to anymore. It would require wearing a gown for me (which I have some prom dresses/old bridesmaid dresses to choose from) and a tux for my husband who does not even know the bride. My husband does not own a tux or anything that would meet the location's dress code and we cannot afford to purchase/rent a tux. (We have 2 other weddings that same month that we are in!) How do I tell the bride that I would love to come to her wedding but I just cannot afford it?

You don't have to tell her why you aren't coming. Just decline.

Like everyone said on E, you can just RSVP no with no explanation.

No explanation is required.  Just check the "no" box on the RSVP.

I would decline and then send a nice card and gift from the registry. You don't have to give an explaination, but if you still feel the need, just say " We are sorry we will be unable to attend due to prior commitments. Wishing you many wedding blessings!" Im sure that's sufficient.
