Dancing at afternoon reception - weird?

Hey,

My FI and I are having a 1pm ceremony immediately followed by an afternoon reception, from apporx 1:30-1:-45 to 5ish. We figure most of the time will be spent eating and mingling and toasting, but would like to do at least a first dance together. We still haven't decided when this will happen, or if we should transition into open dancing for everyone after.

Has anyone been to an afternoon reception with dancing? There will be lots of beer and wine!

Assuming this is on a weekend, you'll get some people to dance.  But you should be prepared for other people just not being in the mood to boogie down in the mid-afternoon (I'd be one of those people - dancing is an exclusively night activity for my people).  But the beer and wine will help.  So, by all means invite people to dance, but prepare for it not to be a club-like atmosphere.
  • we have the same time frames as you....we are planning to dance atleast SOME lol me and  FH will dance, hopefully ppl will follow.. and beer/wine will help ;)  just incase ppl aren't ready to dance, then we are thinking of games etc (like the shoe game) to do to keep ppl entertained

  • Our ceremony started at 1, too.  We had an open bar, full meal, and lots of dancing.  If you have a good band/DJ and you and your new H are setting the example of having fun on the dancefloor, many people will dance.

Don't do games.  It's a wedding, not a kids birthday party.  Adults can keep themselves entertained.
  • If the music is good, people will dance.
  • meh....games, no games, dancing, no dancing :) have fun and make it yours!  We aren't planning on a "dance club" atmosphere, but have some fun songs to dance to.  i've been to receptions where they play games (i'm not talking about simon says ;) and it has been a great time and ppl enjoyed it.

But as most ppl said, if they see you and FH having a great time and dancing, they'll follow!  Good luck :)

    I have.
Lots of fun getting an afternoon buzz on and dancing!
  • Thanks everyone!!

We actually don't have it in our budget for a band/DJ and are planning on doing our own Itunes playlist, so that will probably keep any dancing pretty low key. I do like the idea of a first dance just for romance sake...as for others getting their drunken dance on, maybe it will be a spur of the moment thing
  • It's a celebration! Everyone will be in good moods, great "spirits" will  be flowing, if the music is fun and upbeat I'm sure there will be dancing. I would dance! :)

If you google "Dj'ing your own wedding" or things to that effect you can get some good tips on how the music should flow and what order you should put things in.
  • I went to a 1:00 pm wedding last summer, and the couple did a first dance. It was really sweet and beautiful. They also didn't have a DJ, just a guest who volunteered to man the iPod. No one ended up dancing except for the kids and the bridal party. Then again, there was no alcohol, not even champagne, so I'm sure that was a factor.
