Hosts a thing of the past?

We've asked my FI's aunt and uncle to host our reception. they were wondering what their duties would inlclude. I  plan on sending an email w/what is required of them, but as not to leave anything out, I would looked on theknot to find a list. However, I can't find anything that references the host and hostess of the reception. Is this a thing of the past? Is anyone else having hosts for their reception? Are they any good recources to help them know what they are responsible for?

Usually, if the B+G aren't paying for the wedding, the parents are, and that would make them the hosts.  I guess if parents aren't in the picture, and aunt and uncle have raised you, it would be normal to ask them to host. Then their responsibility would be to pay for the wedding. But if B+G are, then they are the hosts, and you wouldn't ask someone else to be host.

I've never heard of hosts until I started chatting here. Perhaps it's a regional thing or a family-based thing. If hosts are common in your inner circle, then I would ask someone within that circle to help you determine what hosts actually do. If you just heard about hosts somewhere else and it is NOT common in your inner circle, then I would skip it. Because you could risk offending someone if hosts are not common in your family and then you're suddenly putting the aunt and uncle to work when they could otherwise be enjoying the reception. I'd be VERY uncomfortable with asking a guest to "do" anything for my wedding. That's a job for a paid vendor or reception site staff member. Guests should not be put to work in any way.

As a host I would think that they would probably make a toast at some point and probably walk around to different tables saying hi to people and making sure they're having a good time. But, I wouldn't think that this was something that you would ask somebody to do. I think it would be up to your Aunt and Uncle to take the lead on that role.
