Is a different "theme" ok?

So I already picked a "theme" for the reception. Is it ok to do it up different for the cocktail hour? Id like to have my guests see different sides of my fiance and I but then I don't want things to look disorganized or just thrown together... thoughts?

Re: Is a different "theme" ok?

  • Sure you can.  Weddings don't really need a "theme" though.  Usually it's just all tied together with colors and centerpieces.  If you want to use a different decor for the cocktail hour, go for it, just remember it's only an hour so if you have a budget to watch, don't go crazy.

  • The "theme" of your wedding really is "We're getting married!" I'd need to know more about what you are considering Theme to really decide if it's too much/too busy.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Depends If you do all princess for the coaktail hour and Metalica for the reception I'd laugh at you as a guest. Happy Marriage with shades of the color blue is what we did
  • Nobody cares about your "theme." They are there to watch you get married and eat and drink afterward. Not criticize your decorations. So do what you want and don't paint yourself into a corner with "themes."

  • We're having two different "themes" for the reception.  For the cocktail hour, we're going to do white and blush pink, kind of a very serene Japanese/Asian feel (not cheesy stereotypical Japanese/Asian).  Lots of branches and delicate flowers with soft candlelight with capri shell "Asian lantern" styled candleholders.  Then for the reception it's a lot more dramatic.  It's a whole winter "comfort" theme.  The colors are eggplant, pewter and ivory.  We're doing glittered branches paired with lush all white centerpieces, and gobs and gobs of candles all over the place.  The walls are pewter fabric (just the way they are), and they're going to be washed with eggplant uplighting after dinner when the dancing starts.I think as long as you have some similar elements with the two themes, I think you can totally pull it off.  Good luck!

  • There's no way to tell without knowing what you are trying to combine.
