Food choices

I'm having a hard time deciding what menu choices to offer at my reception.  I am allowed to pick 2 entrees from which the guests can choose either option.  My choices are hawaiian chicken (marinated grilled chicken w/ grilled pineapples, shiitake mushrooms and sweet & sour sauce), grilled filet of atlantic salmon (glazed salmon filet with mango salsa and orange beurre blanc), and top round beef served with a tiger sauce.I don't want to serve the typical chicken & beef, which is what I have been offered at every single wedding I've been to.  But, maybe it would be option that would suit most guests?  I don't know...Hawaiian chicken & salmon?Hawaiian chicken & beef?Beef & salmon?I need opinions on this, please!  TIA!

Re: Food choices

  • What is Tiger Sauce? The chicken sounds delicious. Fish is hit or miss and most people don't care for it. In which case, I would go with chicken and beef.
  • Tiger sauce has a little kick to it...and kind of a sweet & sour taste.  Sort of A1-ish.
  • Chicken and beef is so common at weddings because it's just universally liked.  Not everyone will eat salmon or fish.  I would just go with the either the chicken and beef or beef and salmon.

  • To me the chicken and salmon sound like the best entrees out of that list. But, to pp's point chicken and beef are usually more universally liked. Fish is always a little risky especially when you start putting "exotic" things on it like mango salsa.
  • For the hawaiian chicken, I HATE pinapple and I know many people (adults) who dislike mushrooms).Grilled filet of salmon sounds good to me (although I don't like mango.. i'd deal with it).I would choose one of those (IMO salmon) plus another dish (i'd choose chicken.. basically everyone likes chicken) for those pickier eaters, like myself.
  • Salmon can be a tricky fish to cook.  I adore salmon when it's cooked properly, but more often than not, it comes out dry and totally flavorless. All of those options sound rather exotic.  You should probably go through your guest list and see if you have any meat-and-potatoes picky eaters before you make a decision.  If I were a guest choosing between those three, I'd probably go with the salmon and brace for disappointment.  I'm a somewhat adventurous diner, but those sound like a little too much for me.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I'd offer the salmon and the beef, primarily because that's a really "standard" choice at weddings I attend. I rarely see chicken as an option. BUT I would change one of the sauces. I'm not familiar with tiger sauce, but if the PP poster is correct and it's a sweet and sour sauce with a kick, I think that's too close to the mango salsa. FWIW, I also think the chicken is too close in style. I'd offer ONE option with a fruity sweet sauce and one dressed completely differently.
  • chicken & beef.  You will need something at least 95% of ppl can eat. Many ppl have seafood allergies or don't eat red meat. Chicken is always the safest option which is why its most common. The beef is a nice fall back.  So I would choose chicken & beef.
  • Seriously.. this thread is making me hungry..
  • can they do another fish besides salmon? i agree with the PP unless it's cooked perfectly it's awful. tilapia and sea bass are pretty hard to screw up and neither will ahve the strong flavor of salmon (which is what most people dont like about it).

  • Look, it comes down to being your wedding and the theme you're going for. It sounds like you're having a beachy wedding. Go with the salmon and chicken, if that is the case. Beef can be heavy on stomachs in a setting like that. I hope you can resolve your problem in a way that makes you happy!
  • The restaurant where my reception is taking place is a top notch restaurant in my area.  I personally don't like salmon, but I am not at all worried that the guests who do choose salmon would not like the way it is cooked.  I know from personal experience that everything at this restaurant is cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. From what I can get out of everyone's response here, it seems as though I should definitely offer beef as one of the choices.  So ok, beef it is.  Now... Beef & salmon or beef & chicken? Decisions, decisions...
  • I am doing a Chicken and Halibut (and a vegetarian), but I also know that many of my guests do not like red meat and will not eat it.  But I can not think of a single guest that I have that does not like Chicken, Fish or both.  I think it really just depends on your guests and what is the norm with them.  I think what ever you choose will be fine, you are offering an option and many brides do not even offer a choice.  IN fact, most weddings I have been to lately just serve everyon chicken.  I can not imagine that anyone would complain that you are giving them an option!
