Hockey Theme

We are doing a hockey themed reception. Our centerpieces will have hockey pucks and sticks. We are getting bride and groom jerseys made up. But, other than that...I'm at a complete loss as to what we can do. Our ceremony is semi-formal and a little bit nicer. But, the reception we really just want to have fun with. Ideas?

Oh, and our groom's cake is a hockey rink.

I don't know much about hockey, so I'm not much help. Have the BMs carry hockey sticks instead of bouquets, and give the GMs each a black eye and missing tooth, stage a fight or game of "broom ball hockey" or have a "penalty box"? A hockey themed groom's cake or cake topper, hockey pucks as wedding favors? A scoreboard?

I think what you have planned is just fine.  Remember, a little "theme" goes a long way.  Push it and it ends up looking more like an 8 year old boy's birthday party than a wedding.

Ditto Trix on this. If it's "semi-formal" and "a little bit nicer", what you have is fine. You don't want to totally take away from the fact that this is a wedding.Remember, themes are not bad things to have, but "overkill" can get really tacky, really quickly.Then again, overkill on anything, theme related or not, at a wedding can get really tacky, really quickly.

Something fun may be to have you and the bridal party enter to a song that you would hear at a hockey game, like the hey song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5NSi_phshw  or the goal song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7ab0sj4fAM&feature=related

I am glad to hear that you all think that a little is better than too much. I don't want to go to the extreme of it being tacky. I read some posts about sports themed weddings where everything right down to the invitations are part of the theme. And, that's what got me worried about whether I have enough. One idea I did come up with last night, and someone mentioned it here too it looks like....when they intro the bridal party at the reception...we are going to have them each (there are 5 couples) hold a hockey stick to make an arch for us to come through....and then I think I'll take that a step further and have a hockey song played during that point! I LOVE IT! Also, I had another thought last night....we were going to have a guest book at the ceremony entrance for people to sign while they're waiting for the ushers to seat them. But, I thought it'd be neat for the reception to have a hockey stick for people to sign as well....thoughts?

OOooo! My FI and his family are hockey fanatics! For our reception entrance we will be playing Rock and Rock Part II and walking under an arch of bedazzled hockey sticks. Our wedding party is really getting into it and the best man is hosting an arch rehersal! I have a couple of pics of the sticks in my bio
