BBQ?

I have never been a big fan of bbq at weddings, but we are going to be working with a tight budget. I'm from the Middleofnowhere, TN I'm worried bbq is to country and I'm not going for the country wedding. Any suggestions for another less expencive option?

Re: BBQ?

  • Are you hiring a caterer?  It seems like the caterer should have other options besides bbq.  Maybe fried chicken, mashed potatoes, a vegetable or some other type of chicken or beef dish with sides.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with BBQ. We almost decided to do this in my area. I know of a bride who is getting married in March on my Local Board and she is using Sonny's BBQ catering for her wedding. She also has some nice BBQ pics in her bio. You should page NAVYBABY on the budget wedding or North FL board...

  • If you're willing to have an early wedding, maybe a brunch reception. Tends to be cheaper than lunch/dinner food and you have a carving station and quiches. However, I don't think there is anything wrong with BBQ. I'd much rather have yummy BBQ than dry, tasteless chicken. Consider dressing up the traditional side dishes - ex. truffle oil baked mac n cheese and honey glazed roasted vegetables.
  • BBQ is delicious! I would be psyched to see this as the meal at a wedding. I would just talk to some local BBQ vendors, express your desire for a more formal type of atmosphere, and see what they can do for you. Maybe you could do a nice marinated or country-fried chicken breast, beef brisket, pulled pork with scalloped or twice-baked potatoes, a gourmet macaroni and cheese, etc.

  • I so understand what you mean. I'm in Texas, so BBQ catering is a dime a dozen and soooo cheap compared to other types. It may be delicious and popular, but a little "casual" for a wedding. But when you're on a very tight budget, sure, you may to settle on some things. But it doesn't mean you have to go "countree". But they also often have other menu items besides BBQ. They probably have roast beef, roast or smoked chicken, turkey, or ham. Add potatoes, a vegetable, and salad, and you have a simple catered meal. You can work with them on the style you are going for. It's not like they HAVE to serve use checkered tablecloths and plain paper plates and red plastic cups, lol. If you furnish nicer plates, flatware, cups, and tablecloths, they might very well upgrade something else in exchange for them not having to furnish the paper goods. Call around and see if any will work with you to get a classier wedding look. I think it's doable.
  • I'm in Tennessee too (Nashville, but wedding will be in Pigeon Forge) and we're doing BBQ.  But we're not doing the standard pulled pork sandwiches and cole slaw. We will have smoked tenderloin and roast chicken and a few "nicer" sides like roasted new potatoes, green beans, and something else.... I forget what. Oh, and a tossed salad.  It's still very affordable.  We are having a casual outdoor wedding so I don't think anyone would perceive it as "country".... just casual.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions and for just putting my mind at ease. I don't know what i had against BBQ in the first place, seeing that I'm the only one who saw it as being too country makes me feel so much better.
