Wedding Reception Forum

Too much going on?

So we're getting married Fourth of July weekend and our colors are red with a bit of blue. Fi is wearing his Dress Blues uniform, and we're having a sword ceremony. Our STDS and invites have a marine and a bride on them....I would not say we are having a "military themed" wedding...but maybe I dont' know what would make it fully themed. We're going to have a military cake topper too.But my favors are going to be red white and blue colors, linens, etc. We're doing a seating chart, and for the table names we sort of tossed the idea around about naming them after our favorite sports team...Well now FI wants to get mini NFL helmets and put them in the middle of the table, so people know which table is which, and have it as a our center piece. That will not be our center piece, I will be making a center piece.I am a sports writer, and he likes sports...However, I don't really love the NFL helmet thing, I'm not really sure what I would do to let people know which table they are sitting at....And I'm afraid that just seems really random to thrown NFL helmets out there, you know?FI has been really good about sort of kind of trying to help me with stuff, or at least listening to me and pretending he's paying attention.I'd like him to be more involved too. But I just don't know if our reception will seem "too busy" with military, rwb, and random NFL stuff going.I wanted to keep it simple, with simple rwb favors and such. I wanted to name the tables after teams, but not put sports paraphernalia out there....

  • Unless your fave teams are the Patriots or the Bills, then I don't know that it would match. The fact that he is in uniform doesnt really make it military themed, nor does the red white and blue. I went to a 4th of July wedding this year (R, W & B), and and they had a bobblehead cake topper and baseballs inthe centerpieces. Football is just as much America's game as baseball is. I think that you should compromise, though, because if you have the military and the football elements, it might seem to be a very masculine aura. Maybe you can name your tables after the teams but not necessarily put the helmets up? I really don't know..

  • I would compromise with him. Tell him you're O.K. with naming the tables after teams but that you'd rather not have the helmets out, and see what he says. However, if you've been calling a lot of the shots (most girls do, just because they're more interested in details and decor), and if he really has his heart set on this, I'd personally throw him a bone and get the helmets if it'll make him happy. If you've been equally making decisions, though, I'd try to talk him out of it if you're really unhappy with the helmets. For what it's worth, I don't think they'll look bad, unless they're really big and you use a lot of other football decor items around it. If they're small helmets and they're placed next to a card with the table number and name on it, I think it'll be fine and just serve as a prop to help people find the Giants table or whatever.

  • How many tables do you have?  Football helmets would be expensive centerpieces, unless you got mini ones.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • The STDs,  the dress blues and sword ceremony are more a function of your fiance being in the military than any type of theme. I wouldn't worry about that. Also, most of the guests will see the RWB as more of an homage to the 4th of July Holiday weekend so it all goes together. The mini helmets seem random. I wouldn't have them on the table without a purpose. Also, helmets don't necessarily have the team name on them; many have the logo or mascot so many guests will be confused trying to find Table Buffalo Bills.
  • We're going to have about 10-14 tables.I really dislike the helmet idea, but don't mind just naming the tables. He wants to get the mini helmets. But I think it'll still be expensive and we wouldn't do any other football decorations.
