Napkins

Okay, this is my first post on the knot!  I am not much of a message board person in general, so please bear with me.We are having a not-too-formal reception (its from about 3pm to 6 or 7) with no sit down dinner, just lots and lots of different appetizers (should be just as much food as a 'real dinner, just a different way of doing it).  I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with some of the super-nice plastic plates, but I'm stuck on napkins.  Should I go ahead and get linen ones?  These work out to about $0.75-$1.00 each when bought in bulk over the internet.  Or should I just save that $150 for something better, and get paper napkins.  And that would save myself the trouble of washing and finding a home for a bunch of cloth napkins. Then I wonder, with paper napkins, do I put them in a basket near the food, or can I put them on the tables.  I was actually thinking in a 'display' kind of way, sitting maybe two sleek metal or clear napkin holders in the center of each table (rectangular tables), on either side of our centerpieces.  Or is that cheesy, I can't decide!  But it seems so USEFUL!  Napkin color likely to be brown, ivory or dark plum, or maybe something kind of interesting from IKEA, like a pattern or graphic with elements of those colors.  Tables will be (I think) latte tablecloth with chocolate runner (or vice versa). Thanks!

Re: Napkins

  • Linen napkins do not fit with plastic plates. If you are going to upgrade to real upgrade the plates first then the napkins. Nice paper napkins fit with china but linen napkins do not fit with plastic
  • ffmaid, thanks for your insight, that makes total sense.  its easy to get ones head too wrapped around things. I guess the heart of my question is more about the display/distribution of napkins, specifically the idea of putting the paper napkins on the tables (in some sort of minimalist type holder)...thats the part I can't decide if it would look silly or not.
  • Why don't you roll up the silverware in the napkins and use a paper ring in one of your coordinating colors to hold the roll together? You could put the silverware at each setting or in the center of the table.
