Small small small wedding - need help!

Hey Everyone,

My future partner and I are planning an extremely small wedding.  The guest list is roughly 30 people (including 4 small children and 3 "+1's" and is all immediate family.  Is there anyone else out there that is planning a similar sized wedding?  I am most curious about what you might be doing for music and/or dancing at your reception.  I feel that the small number of guests creates SUCH an intimate feel that things might be awkward, espeically if no one feels like cutting a rug.

So ... are you out there Small-Wedding-Brides?

Let me know!

    Thanks you guys.

Dani - that is so true.  I think that in my perfect world, we would hire a small band and everyone would have a blast dancing the night away.  In reality though, only a few of the people there actually enjoy dancing.  And injecting live music into that scenario would end up more like a concert and less like the fun, interactive family gathering that we're trying to achieve!

    Time to think more ...

  • I think based on what you described, it would be great to just have background music and let everyone socialize and enjoy each other's company.  For most people, the best part of a wedding reception is getting to visit with family and friends.

When we first started planning, we were in the same situation! I agree that based on what you said, background music would be just fine. You could always bring an ipod with speakers or something to and play that as the night goes on and if people really want to dance. We decided to go in a different direction though and are having an even smaller wedding - just 16 guests plus us.  We are having the ceremony at a historic hotel (they have a great elopement package that was perfect for us). We are then having dinner at the hotel restuarant - the restaurant has a lounge area with a band so people can enjoy and dance as much or as little as they want and at no extra cost to us. We decided to do it this way since we live far from our families. We are then having a back yard party later in the year back in our hometown so that all of our extended family and friends back there can come and celebrate our marriage. Good luck and happy planning!

    Thanks AndyJill!

You know, sometimes it's really helpful to take a step back and rethink things.  Right now I have it so pounded into my own head that we will hold our reception in one place when, in fact, we could go in a number of different ways.

Time to do some more talking and thinking.  I LOVE the idea of dinner, or at least dessert and drinks, at an establishment that already has live music!  What a bargain.

  • We are having us, plus 21 adults, 5 kids, and 2 babies.  It will be an 11am ceremony that will take 10 minutes tops.  The we'll have a full seated lunch served at noon.  There will be beer and wine and several nonalcohlic beverage choices.  We have FI's ipod loaded with sappy love songs as well as songs that might make a person want to get up and dance.  We'll bring in his ipod docking station that has a small amplifer on it and the music coming out of it sounds really, really good - not like it's coming from a cheap tin can.  So we'll keep the music down low as background music.  If anyone starts to decide to cut the rug we'll crank up the volume a bit and let them have at it.  Otherwise, the volume will stay down low as background.
