Family Tree Idea

Hi all,
I had an idea for a decoration at our reception and was wondering what everyone thought. I am having a Renaissance wedding and was thinking of creating a family tree as a decoration. I was going to get the family history (well as much as I can) from both sides with my fiance and myself at the bottom. I was thinking of making it in a nice calligraphy font with some aged paper in a large size and put it on a door or something. I'm just worried that it would be a bit tacky. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

  • I'm not sure why you would think it's tacky...it sounds fine to me.

  • "Tacky" is completely subjective, the manifestation of fears that people will disapprove of you and your wedding. Everything is tacky to someone. Decorate how you want.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • We did a display of relatives' wedding photos and their relations to DH and I and people really liked it. So I think it's definitely a good idea, people appreciate knowing about familes.

I disagree. When someone says that something about someone's wedding is tacky, it's generally that they made a faux pas that made their guests uncomfortable. Examples of things that are tacky:

sending an STD and not an invite

requesting cash gifts

not serving a meal appropriate for the wedding's time of day

That being said, there's nothing tacky about having a family tree.

Knottie BecW2be on the Etiquette board made a tree of her guests. It was really cool. Here's her bio: http://www.mywedding.com/becw2be
  • See, I don't call those "tacky," I call those "rude." When I've seen people here ask whether something is tacky, they're just as often asking about their color scheme or an element they want to include in the ceremony. That's just a matter of taste, and there's nothing in the world that everyone universally will like, especially when it comes to weddings.
