additional lighting for reception hall

we're renting out a hall for the reception, and we get to decorate it the whole day before (YAY)  I was there yesterday to have a look at it, set up a table, make sure I have everything I need for centerpieces, etc.

one thing we dont like, there is 2 types of lighting....
a) everything lit up with flourscent bulbs (bleh)
b) flourescents off, and just a few scattered light fixtures which makes it REALLY dark.

i have about 9 candles per table (floating and tealights) which will have to be replinshed every hour or so :(

I'll have string lights as well, but I dont think those throw off too much light...any ideas on how to creatively light the area without spending a fortune, and without ticking off the hall?  I'm allowed to make small holes, but cant use tape.

HELP ME!

Re: additional lighting for reception hall

  • What about colored lighting going up the wall.  Maybe your DJ has some extra light that he could place throughout the hall (if you're having a DJ that is).  Look into rental places that you can rent some additional "mood" lighting.  That's the best phrase I have for it, sorry.

Here are some picks i found in reception decor photos on TK.  You can get shaped lighting or do the lighting up the wall.  I hope to find something I can do this with.

  • lanterns with LED lights scattered? or the strings of lights that have actual blubs that you use in normal lights? I don't know what they are called.
