grooms cake.... i have no ideas!

hi ladies, i mainly stick to my local board but i thought i could probably get more advice if i branched out...

i really like the idea of a groom's cake. my fiance has been great about supporting me with every design decision for the wedding and as much as i'm trying to incorporate things that he will like, i think overall he views it as my show. i want to have an aspect that is 100% completely him. my problem is, i don't really know what to do and our wedding date is fast approaching (may 8, 2010).

in researching, i've read that a lot of people design a groom's cake around the groom's interests. the problem is, i'm not finding anything cake-worthy. he loves his xbox, he loves our cat, he's fascinated with pirate ships... but none of these say 'groom's cake for my 30 year old future husband. to me, they say '5 year old's birthday party'. :)

so, i need inspiration, ideas, something to get my creativity rolling again.

thanks!

  • Has he said what he wants? Why not ask him to design it?

  • If it's not a suprise, I'd get his input. I think any of his interests (xbox, pirate ships) could make great groom's cakes. Here is the one we got for my DH (big boston sports fan):

oh wow, that cake is awesome! i've been trying to get my fiance more into sports lately, it's a slow process!

it's looking like it will be a surprise. he explained the concept to my mom a few weeks back and when he was explaining it, he mentioned that it's usually a surprise for the groom. up until that point, i had always figured i would get his input on what he would want!

  • I think the xbox sounds like a great groom's cake! My fiance is a band teacher, so we're having his done like a xylophone. We also thought about his xbox360 and the world of warcraft logo. the xylophone seemed like the cooler option.
  • My fiance actually doesn't like cake but he loves pie.  So we're having our caterer make individual mini pies in his favorite flavors.  They are going to use different levels on the table to display them.  We thought it fit well into our "Southern Charm" feel and the fact that we're getting married at an old plantation home.  The caterer is making one normal size pie for us to cut that's specifically just for him to eat.  He loved the idea and is now very excited about it.

Do you know what games he likes on the xbox.  You get a replica of master chiefs head or a vehicle or something for halo. Guitar or drums after rock band.  While a xbox cake would be neat I think that it would be better to pick something from the game he plays all the time.  This is one example I found for halo. Let us know what you decide. I would love to see it.

  • Mine was simple, my husband loves the Ohio State Buckeyes, so I just had a flat sheet cake designed to look like a football field, and then a half football was raised out of the cake in the middle. The endzones said, "Go Bucks!" He loved it.

  • Hi! I'm actually doing a Groom's cake as a surprise for my fiance because he has been so supportive with everything and I wanted to throw in a surprise for him. He works at UPS so we are making the emblem into a cake and got a little model UPS truck and a very very tiny UPS packages to kind of decorate the table. I can't wait to see his face!! But I would definately pick something that means a lot to him. I think the Groom's Cake should be what he likes so that he feels special during the wedding. I also like the surprise factor but that's just me Wink
  • I know what you mean when you say you dont want it to look childish....but thats one of the fun things about a grooms cake, you can get away with anything(well just about anything). My husband is a golf coach so I did square cake with golf balls all around it and he LOVED it. If your trying to suprise him, its definitely the thought that makes it so special.
  • I also surprised my hubby with a grooms cake. He loved it!! His was a baseball bat!! So cute!! My cousin makes cakes and she has done a couple "skull & crossbone" piarate themed cakes. They were on a simple round sheet cake that looked like wood grain, then the skull (with eye patch) and crossbones were on top. They are really cute!!

  • I've definitely seen Xbox groom's cakes and pirate groom's cakes.  Cats I haven't seen, but it's doable.

I would only think it would look like a kid's birthday cake if it were just a plain sheet cake decorated, like the ones you get in the supermarket.  It will cost a bit more, but if you want it to look really awesome and more grown-up, a sculpted cake is your best bet.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • One of my friends had an amazing grooms cake- She had her engagement remade as the grooms cake. Joe proposed to Mary on stage at a rock concert- So Mary had the cake made as the stage with the bands logo in the backgorund and Joe and Mary were on the stage- Joe holding a ring the size of his head- Made on the cake that is- LOL!!! It was the absolute cutest thing ever. Joe was so surprised and after all he had gone through to propose, he felt like Mary was truly appreciative of the proposal!!

The most inspiration for a grooms cake can come from what he is into:
Does he have any hobbies? Whats his favorite movie or tv show? Make a list of what he likes. If you want to have agrooms cake centered more around both of you- what do you like to do together? Replicate where you met. YOu have a cat toegther and  Having a cake replicated to look like your pet covers many areas- Its away to "involve" your pet in your wedding, is giving a grooms cake, and  will have all great reactions from guest from the oohs and aahs to everyone laughing and is still sentimental.

Now I must say we have alot in common. I am getting married on May 2, 2010 and I feel 100% like you do. David has been extremely supportive of doing everything that I want to do. Also very into his XBOX and our sweet cat Bella- I have had to expand my horizons in trying to find him a cake that doesn't stray to far from our wedding & that is personalized to his interest. I have felt the same way that everything I have found or come up with just seems to birthcake.
So I finally came up with a grooms cake that matches our wedding cake and is centered around David. My wedding cake is 3 square tiers- so I designed the grooms cake to also be constructed on 3 square tiers (significantly smaller than my wedding cake.) We are having a Lord of the rings wedding theme- which we both love- so the cake is the 3 books piled ontop of each other. The books are going to be made to look very old fashioned and will have gold writing duplicated from the titles and author of the books.
David has read those books a million times!!!

You have to get very creative and think a bit out of the box. I really think duplicating the wedding cakes shape though takes away from it looking to birthday cake!!!

Ihave also seen brides have a groomscake designed by the groom. Basically its like letting him pick his very own wedding cake. Your letting him do something he wants and it won't be to odd looking!!!

    Well goodluck!!! Hope this helps!!
  • Go with something he is passionate about.  My fiancee is a huge fan of University of Oklahoma football team (a surprise); so I talked to the ladies handling the wedding cake and we are going to do the grooms cake as the University of Oklahoma football stadium.  You could easily talk to someone about doing a cake shaped and looking exactly like the XBox 360 or in the shape of a pirate ship.  This turns it from a seeming like a 5 year old party cake to something more grown up.  Try watching Cake Boss or Ace of Cakes to get some ideas.
  • You can do whatever he loves.  If it is his xbox, work with that by doing the xbox with a controller or his favorite game to play on the side.  Not all of it has to be cake.  My FI collects old Coleman lanterns, we go to a convention every other year.  He picks up old crappy ones, fixes them up and then keeps them on a shelf he built and stained and put glass doors into.  They look amazing - all 50 of them!  I asked our baker if she could do one, and she looked at a picture and said that it would be no problem!  I am doing a really rare one that I picked up for him as his gift as well - so for him its all surprises!!!

They made an xbox cake that is adorable!
  • thanks again everyone, these ideas are great and they're helping me realize that i was probably stressing too much about it (imagine that!)

honestly, i sometimes think my life would be easier if he was passionate about sports, although i like the tv freedom i have right now.

anyways, i think i'm going with the xbox cake. thanks for the link, blondebride, that came is awesome and if i can get anything even close to that i think he's going to be ecstatic!

now i'm just waiting for the price quotes... i've sent some pictures to a couple different places and hopefully their answers won't make me pass out!

you guys have been great. i love my local board but there are so few of us that are active, i may have to stick around here a while :)
