cocktail hour

So, with our cocktail hour, we are not doing the same special linens/chairs as the reception (it is in a separate room) and I was thinking of not doing any flowers because people will only be in there for an hour, so is there something I should/could put on the tables instead?

I was thinking votives on the high top tables, but I don't know about the low, seated tables. There will be 6 tables of each.

What is something cute (ie: not cheesy, lame, or cheap) or creative to put on the low tables where people can sit, or do I not need to put anything at all??

Thank you!!

Re: cocktail hour

  • I don't think you *need* anything, but it wouldn't be hard to put out a few tealights on the tables.  That would be subtle and wouldn't take up too much space.
  • I agree with Jessica. If you don't want the flowers there, I'd go with some candles!
  • I think doing candles on all the tables would be great, if you're against flowers. We're having cocktail hour in a separate area from the rest of the reception as well, and we're doing a whole bunch of candles one each table. We are doing some flowers though, but not on the tables - we're putting them on the escort card table and two tall arrangements flanking the staircase.

You could do family wedding photos - a relative did this at her wedding and it was really sweet. She had photos from her parents and grandparents' weddings, as well as the same from her fiance's side. It was a nice touch, and I didn't find it as cheesy as if they had just done a bunch of pictures of themselves, ya know? Just an idea :)
  • We did candles and rose petals.  They went with the flowers from the rest of the room, but were way cheaper.

FWIW, I found that quite a few of our guests ended up back out in the cocktail area socializing during the dancing in the ballroom.  I suppose it was a little quieter so that people could talk.
  • I think we are going to do the relatives pics on the table with the guest book (?). We could do a bunch of candles, which could look nice. I'm not opposed to some flowers, I just feel like why bother spending the money when people are only going to be there an hour and hardly anyone will notice flowers vs candles. The room is also connected to the outside garden, so people can go in and out.
