Formal Wedding with a dad that loves to cook!

We originally planned on having a local business cater our wedding. the expenses were getting on upwards of $5000. My dad loves to cook. And most of our family and friends LOVE his cooking. Would it be tacky to take the cheaper way out and have BBQ and Grilled Chicken Plates? My Grandma and Aunt also love to cook and have offered to do all the side fxings and displays.

Any thoughts?

I think that once dad puts on an apron, your wedding is no longer "formal".  And that's okay if that's what you want.

I know that my DH would not have wanted to have responsibility for cooking on our DD's wedding day.  FOB is a pretty busy guy, and it's a pretty emotional day for most dads.

I think having a BBQ meal is great.  But as soon as you make family do the cooking, they lose their ability to mix and mingle, and IMO, that's a big piece of what FOB and MOB do that day.

    I vote no.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

If you do this I would set it up as a buffet style dinner and find someone else to watch over the food and replace it when it runs out. You don't want your dad catering to your guests the whole time. Also pick foods that can easily be prepared the night before so he won't have to spend as much time cooking. For my wedding we're all chipping in on food prep but the day of the wedding my stepdad's sister is doing everything so that my parents don't have to worry about it, it's her wedding gift to me and my FH. I think it's fine to have family help you out with this stuff. I didn't really think about it at firs but trix is right, your father is supposed to migle with guests, you don't want him stuck in the kitchen all day.
    I'm married!
