No dancing at the reception

My mom and I got into a heated discussion (just under an argument) about having dancing at the reception.  Neither FI and I are really into dancing.  We are having a very small wedding with probably no more than 40 guests (family and our closest friends).  I think that it would be kind of strange to have dancing for such a small group of people.  Also, FI and I were either going to go with a restaurant reception or some kind of unique space (like a museum).  We wanted something short and sweet like a cocktail reception with heavy apps, so we're talking about 3 hours for the reception.

My mom says a dance free reception will be boring.  Thoughts?  Has anyone ever been to a dance free reception?  Or is anyone else having a dance free reception?

P.S. before it comes up, FI and I are paying for the wedding ourselves.  I know it is ultimately our decision.  I'm just curious if others share my mother's opinions.

Re: No dancing at the reception

  • I don't see a problem.  But I do think PP is right... you do at least need some kind of background music.
  • Most of the receptions I've been to have been dance free. They were fine by me, since I don't dance anyway. Mine will be dance free as well, but some background music will be playing.
  • My FI and I are having a dance free reception too and we are having about 40-50 guests! We will only be doing our first dance, then the rest of the night there will just be background music. There will technically be a dance floor but I dont see anyone getting up randomly and starting to dance :)

I think it would be more fun to offer good food, alcohol and great conversation! Good Luck!
  • Thanks for all of the input, everyone.
