Groom's Cake

So I want to surprise my hubby to be with a grooms cake that encompasses his favorite hockey team or the Stanley Cup. I have started looking around for bakers, and spoken to a few. The question I'm stuck on is how many should the groom's cake feed? The same number as the wedding cake? Half?
Any help would be great!

Re: Groom's Cake

  • Most people will not take a slice of both, and some people won't eat cake at all.  If the total number of pieces adds up to about 100-110% of your guestlist, you'll have plenty.

  • I *think* the grooms cake was originally because it is considered to be bad luck for a wedding cake to be chocolate, so people started a grooms cake.  I don't think it needs to be too big.

2 of us- a bunch of you! Celebrating the whole night through!

  • I am planning on surprising my fiance with a grooms cake, but I am actually going to serve it at the rehersal dinner.  Something that I hadn't originally thought off, so I thought I would pass the idea on to you.
  • Make sure you have enough cake total, between the two cakes, for every guest to have a piece fo cake.  Usually the groom's cake is smaller than the wedding cake, maybe half the size?

Some people will leave before the cake is served, and some people don't eat cake.  Those usually cancel out the ones that eat a piece of each.  Honestly, I don't think I've ever been to a wedding where they ran out of cake, usually there is at least some left over.
  • @ aramatams - That is an awesome idea to serve it at the rehearsal dinner, and I had not thought of that at all! I might just do that. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the advice and tips! This was a huge help

  • I second aramatams.  I've seen a lot of my friends serve the grooms cake at the RD.

It works well because you're not doubling up on dessert at the reception, and you would probably be providing dessert at the RD anyway.  Also, since the RD is traditionally the groom's family's event, the groom's cake fits the theme.

  • Great question!  I opted to not do a grooms cake for my wedding so I have never looked into this.  However, every wedding I've been to, the grooms cake is usually a small cake (like what you would see at a birthday party or something).  So unless you like chocolate cake more- just a small cake is all you need.
