Making your own cake and more?

My fiance is a fabulous pastry chef and wants to make our own wedding cake with the help of his staff. Someone found out that we were planning on doing this and started freaking out over it. About 20 minutes ago I got a call from one of my aunts saying that making our own wedding cake is "stupid and we should hire so-and-so to do it because it's unacceptable to make the cake for your own wedding." Is she right? Should we just bite the bullet and hire someone or just let her attitude go and continue on? Also during this phone call she asked me who was doing the arrangements for the wedding. I told her it didn't matter and she flipped. Our wedding planner walked out without explanation and our new lady said that we would be better off doing fake flowers since the wedding is in June and it's bound to be hot and possibly humid. However she's calling them "faux flowers" since "fake" just sounds bad to her. OF COURSE someone told my aunt that not only are we doing "faux flowers" but we're making the arrangements ourselves with the help of our new wedding planner. That was brought up and rudely discussed on her end. I just need some advice on dealing with this. She's really been going out of her way to say stuff to make the planning so much more difficult.

It's not whether your FI's bakery is licensed.....it's whether the venue allows ANY food other than their own to be brought in.

FWIW:  I think it would be great for him to make the cake. 

My DD was married in an outdoor ceremony in the middle of July on a 90+ degree day.  Her flowers were lovely and lasted all day and night and into the next day.  Your coordinator is just wrong.  If you want real flowers, have real flowers.

As for your aunt, practice with me:   "Hmmmm Aunt Hortense.  That's an interesting idea.  We'll certainly consider your suggestion."  Then consider it....and discard it.

And if she doesn't let up, as we like to say around here, bean dip her.  "Interesting idea, Aunt Hortense.  As I said, we'll consider it.  Have you tried the bean dip?  It's delicious!"

My fail.....I missed the part about it being cleared with the venue.  Have him bake your cake.  I can't imagine that any wedding cake will be more lovingly prepared.

As for your aunt, don't mention any other planning details with her and tell her that you have everything taken care of. Then give your families a heads up to not talk to her about anything either.

I would have to agree with the above advice. I'm planning on baking our wedding cake as well. As long as you plan ahead you will be fine. The cake will mean more to you if you make it yourself.
As for the flowers, research hardy flowers and keep them cool until the last possible minute. They will look and smell so much better than fake! I'm getting most of ours from the farmers market to save some money.

I think it's sweet he want's to make it, if he knows what he's doing I think it would add a special touch! but yes check if the venue allows it! As for the "faux" flowers... as David Tutera would say, "if your going to use fake flowers I prefer you not using any at all"...lol, plus if it's outdoors I think you should only use real flowers.... how would the faux flowers compare to your natural sorroundings???
I'm sure in Baltimore they have some sort of flower district as they do here in los angeles, my suggestion if your wedding planner can help you arrange you "faux" flowers then I'm sure she can help arrange your real flowers...

As for your aunt........... just nod and smile.....lol

You're aunt shouldn't be making your wedding more stressful. You should ask her to mind her own business. Whose wedding is it anyways!???

The flowers will be fine, I live in FL and have been to several weddings in May/June and not once have I seen faux flowers. Speak to the florist, they will point you in the right direction!
