Venue changing owners...easy out??

Hi ladies - my venue informed me today that they are under new ownership and that I need to sign another contract under the new company. I LOVE the building but the employees are so so hard to get in contact with and it's so stressful I hate dealing with it (under the new company, they are keeping the employees) . I'm wondering if I don't sign the new contract, would I be able to get out of this venue ? what would happen to my deposit ? I'm wondering if I would be able to get it back since I didn't sign the contract for this company?

Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with something similar !

  • i would tell them you arent making a new contract and deserve deposit back.  not sure if you will get it back.  heard stories of this worse that brides werent told till after business sold and lost deposit still and had to pay all over again for same venue but to new owners.

    hope get it back
  • I'm surprised you have to sign a new contract.  Generally when a business is sold, the buyer buys everything, including current contracts.
  • I think that's weird about a new contract too. Strictly speaking you make a contract with the entity (Wedding Dreams LLC) versus the owners (Mr. and Mrs. Dreams; owners of Wedding Dreams LLC).  So if the business changes hands, the parties to the contract don't actually change.

Your case could be different; it'll all depend on what your contract says, but my gut instinct is, "Sorry, you're stuck."

The fact that they want a new contract is pretty odd though; there could be something in the contract that they're aware of and that's why they want you to sign.  Or they might just be completely unsophisticated business people (I'd put my money on the latter).
  • I would take a look at the original contract and see what it says about new ownership.  It could be that it wasn't transferable.  I would also figure out what happened to the old owners.  If it was a business that went belly up, you aren't getting your deposit back.  Depending on the transferability situation, you might be able to get out of it.

I'd also ask for a proposed new contract to compare.  You might find something that explains why they want a new one.

This is why it surprises me that you have the option of choosing to renew  your contract or not.
