Ice cream sundae bar

Has anyone ever done an ice cream sundae bar at their wedding? I'm thinking of doing one since i love ice cream more than cake. I've thought of renting and ice cream cart or using dry ice in coolers to keep the ice cream cold. Any ideas?

  • Sounds delicious!

I'd talk to your venue about this.  They might be able to provide coolers/servers/etc.  Also, there are many venues that do not allow you to bring in outside food, so make sure you have your bases covered.

If you are doing it yourself, I've seen under-the-bed sized plastic storage bins filled with ice used as table-top coolers at picnics... that might work for the ice cream.

  • My college was big on sundae bars.  We'd have them at every big event, including graduation.

    I think this sounds YUM.
  • Hi,
We had an ive cream sundae bar at our wedding.  It was through the reception site. It was a big hit.  We also had cake.  We did the ice cream later on in the evening as a late night snack.

  • You might want to see if you can have the ice cream pre-scooped, so people won't have to wait, and it should be less messy.

And Joy, my college had ice cream at every meal (an alum made a donation specifically for this purpose--and I'm talking 4-6 flavors of hard ice cream, not soft serve), but we only got all the toppings on Sundae Sunday.  Tough life.
  • Thanks for the good ideas
  • Depending on how many guests you have, it might take a long time for people to go through the line.  Maybe you could have two lines?   It would make the topping part go a lot faster, I think.

  • I've been to a wedding with a sundae bar. My only complaint was they just had the toppings in plastic bowls with plastic spoons. It was really messy and all the toppings got dropped in the other bowls so the people that didn't get there first ended up with a HUGE MESS .

So just make sure your caterer will set it up nicely and with enough space.

  • My cousin had one at her wedding. It was a huge hit!  Her caterer froze foodservice sized bins of ice cream in solid blocks of ice, and had staff to scoop it out.  It did backfire a bit, in that the ice cream stayed almost too frozen to scoop, and the staff had a hard time with it (and their hands froze). But everyone loved it.  She did have a small cake, and some bite sized sweets like whoopie pies alongside.
