Table settings and Tablecloths

We are having a very laid back informal wedding/reception. We are having a serve yourself type meal (barbecue, potato salad, coleslaw, etc.) Where do the plates go?? On the food table, or at each seat? Other question, what about table cloths?? What is the big deal about them?!?! Think it will look ok to do white plastic table cloths and green linen runners or overlays?

If you're doing a buffet style serving, you should put the plates at the beginning of the buffet line. In my opinion, table linens make the overall appearance of a room. It gives it a softer, more pulled together look. I personally wouldn't do anything plastic on the tables for table cloths and I really wouldn't mix plastic with linen overlays.

We're putting down butcher paper and having markers on all the tables for people to draw/write us  messages.  If it's laid back that might work for you too.
