What kind of cake would you want at a brunch reception?

We're having a morning wedding (around 10:30am) and a brunch reception (starting around 11:30am). I'm trying to decide what to do for cake. I personally don't like it, so it's hard for me to be a judge.

At 12:30 in the afternoon, would you rather have regular cake (possibly in cupcake form), angelfood cake (with whipped cream and berries, maybe), or some kind of coffee cake?

I'm also debating not having cake at all, because there is already a dessert buffet, and because I don't like cake, so I'm not concerned about the whole 'feeding each other' shenanigans. As a guest, would you be upset if there was no cake?

Re: What kind of cake would you want at a brunch reception?

  • I'm traditional, so at a wedding I would expect some form of cake (cupcakes would count).  For a brunch reception, I would keep the cake fairly light.  I think angelfood cake with berries sounds delicious and isn't too much sugar overload early in the day.
  • I will eat any kind of cake at any time of day!  and yeah, I expect some sort of cake at a wedding, but if you have other desserts available, I wouldn't mind.
  • Just because you personally don't like cake doesn't mean that your guests hate it. The time of day is completely irrelevant as to the type or flavor. It's also perfectly ok to skip the cake and serve any other dessert. If you hate cake that much, don't waste your money on it. As a guest, I wouldn't care if there was cake or not as long as there is some type of dessert. Most people tend to agree.

Keep in mind that angel food cake for example is something that many people don't care for. Coffee cake sounds great. Honestly, serve whatever you want. Since you're already having a dessert buffet, you don't need a separate cake, so your problem is solved.
  • you could do a white cake with strawberry or raspberry filling
  • I could always go for any kind of cake.  If you want to keep it breakfasty, coffee cake sounds great.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

<div>That sounds delish.  At a wedding, any time of the day, i would enjoy a piece of real wedding cake.</div>

  • Ditto panda.  When I go to a wedding, I want wedding cake, I don't care what time it is.  I don't care for angel food cake or coffe cake.
  • Glam, both FI and I hate cake and we, too, are having a brunch reception. We've decided on a carrot cake and a cheesecake with fresh strawberries.

Even though I don't eat cake myself, I would expect to be something at the reception. I'd probably find it a little odd if there was nothing in cake form. LoL.

I really like this idea.  Adding fruit to the cake works really well for brunch.  I would want to have wedding cake at a brunch reception as long as the cake wasn't really, really rich.

  • Angel food cake.  It's light and fluffy, and great with strawberries.  Yummy!

But I can do any kind of cake at any time of day...
  • I'd like angel food cake best at that time of day!
