getting married in vegas....at home reception

So we are getting married in vegas, when we come back we would like to have a party for those who couldnt come to vegas. Im thinking of having it in an art gallery with just appetizers and some desserts from about 5pm-9pm? pretty much a cocktail party.  Would apps be enough food or should i shoot for a buffet style menu? i DO NOT want a sit down table thing

So, lets say i have 150 people max....how many tables and chairs should i rent? the place im interested in also rents some couches and chairs.

I dont want it to look like a wedding reception, but i dont want people to get tired of standing.

Also, how long should i let this go for? is 5-9pm too long? Should I do it earlier in the day?

Should i just do buiffet style and write on the menus that food will be served promtly ay 5?

  • I would have enough seating so that everyone can sit down if they want to. If you do 5-9, I do think you need to have a meal or enough heavy appetizers that it equals a full meal. If you just wanted cocktails and light apps, I would probably start it no earlier than 730 PM.

If you aren't doing dinner or dancing, I think maybe shortening it to 2-3 hours would be good, especially if you decide to do the later start time. Maybe 8-11?

  • Our AHR was 8pm to 12am.  We had passed appetizers and a small buffet plus open bar and cake.

I think your idea sounds fine, but I would push it to an 8pm start time if you don't want to host a full meal.

This sounds perfect!  IMO, the absolute earliest you should start is 7:30.  I like the couch idea, just make sure you have a seat for every asss.

150 guests = 150 places for someone to put their butts.  Minimum.  Rented tables and chairs, hi-tops and barstools, couches, picnic tables, benches with tables.  All works.  150 butt spaces plus extras so groups can sit together.

If it starts at 5, I'd be expecting dinner. Buffet or stations would be perfectly fine.  As long as there's enough food to fill people up like a meal.  If you really only wanted to do munchies and drinks, I'd wait until 8pm.  Or do something in the afternoon, like 2-5.  You might also consider a lunch/brunch thing.  You can do lighter or less food at noontime (but still meal type) and people will usually drink less.  Plus it can be less expensive.

That is a little early for a cocktail party, so I would also suggest pushing it back at least to 6-6:30p.m. with heavy appetizers and hors d'oeuvres (like tapas) that could fill up the way a meal could.  Make it clear that the event is a cocktail party.  Otherwise, buffet dinner would be best.  As for seating, i agree with RebeccaB88.
