Opinions on hotel rooms please

I'm getting ready to book a block of rooms, and as my wedding will be relatively small I wanted to block rooms at one place and maybe jsut recommend another.

The first place is a resort complete with private beach, three restaurants, tiki bar, fire pits, pool, and really nice rooms. BUT, it is out in the middle of nowhere. It's about 30-40 minutes from the ceremony and reception site.

My other option is to block rooms at a standard Embassy Suite type hotel about 20 minutes from the ceremony and reception site. Not excitng, but is right next to a mall and lots of restaurants.

The resort, because of the locatiion is inexpensive, so the price difference between the two is negligable.

My question is this, as a guest, which would you prefer?

Probably the closer one, but I'd book whichever is less expensive.  You could get quotes from both and set your block at whichever gives you the bigger discount, or just block a few rooms at each.

As a guest I would prefer the resort, HOWEVER, I don't think you can recommend a place to stay that THAT'S far from the ceremony/reception. Therefore, I think you should book the other hotel. Unless you book the resort and then provide transportation for everyone from the ceremony/reception and back, which is an added expense and not completely necissary. Maybe offer both locations to guests and have them choose where they would rather stay, but disclose the distance factor??

Honestly, if it's the difference of only a 10 min drive between the two, I'd prefer the resort.  Can you block just a few rooms at both and if you see one filling up faster than that other you can increase the block at that hotel?

I want a hotel that is very close - how much time will I really spend at the hotel?  Most likely not very much so I want to be very close, especially to the wherever the reception is going to be held.

I would go with the closest hotel possible.

My cousin had her wedding 45 min from the (average) hotel she had us stay at.  It was not convenientl getting back to the hotel after the wedding.

Thanks for all the opinions and honesty. My venue is out of the way, so there are not a whole lot of options close to where it will be held. (I think there is a Motel 6 or the like about 10 minutes away.) I'll have to look a bit closer and see what else is around. I really like the resort, we are considering having the rehersal dinner there, but I was really concerned about the distance for the actual wedding. I've talked to a couple of relatives, and they said it was ok, but I was worried they were just being polite.

It woudln't hurt to block a hotel 10 minutes away in addition to one of the others.  Just check reviews online for the hotels nearby.  Service does vary a lot by location at chain motels.

I have the same issue (nice/reasonably priced hotel 30 minutes away vs. ok/expensive hotel 20 minutes away) and I really think that we're going with the 30 minute one. I figure if they'll be driving 20 minutes, i'm sure another 10 will be ok.

Also, since my town is about a 25 minute drive to the site, I figure it's basically the same amount of driving that my local guests will have.
