December Wedding

I am needing some input on some good winter wedding color ideas!  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Re: December Wedding

  • There's the white, ice blue, and silver combination, which has been done absolutely to death.

I like evergreen weddings, with dark green, brown, and maybe a pop of cranberry red.  Jewel tones also work really well in winter, as does a rich gold.

You don't have to match your colors to the season, though.  If you really wanted to do, say, sunflower yellow and baby blue, the fact that it's December shouldn't stop you.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. • I'm going to ditto Aerin in the "have the colors you want, to hell with what time of year it is" attitude.

I had a January 1st wedding and my colors were deep purple (David's Bridal "lapis") and pewter. Which is definitely a more "wintery" color scheme by most definition, but I didn't pick my colors based on the time of year.

Actually, what picked my colors was I totally fell in love with a BM dress ... but I only liked it in the "lapis" color. When my BMs where all on board with the dress (I did consult them on budget and made sure they liked it before I finalized it), I was like "Ok, I guess this is one of the colors". And then I picked the pewter since they complemented each other nicely, imo.

That being said, I also picked out my BM dresses like 5 months out, so I'm sure most people need to have colors picked out prior to that point in time. And nobody should ever pick out BM dresses any sooner than 8 months out.

But anyway, if you want something that is traditionally considered "winter", I would honestly just pay attention to the colors you see most winter clothes coming in. You don't see so many sweaters in colors like bright yellow, orange, or turquoise but you will see lots of navy blues, evergreens and creams. If there's a color that's more "traditionally" another season, maybe you can find a more winter-appropriate version of it (Like maybe if you like red, lean towards a more cranberry-like shade of it).

  • Use any colors you want. Mother Nature does not adhere to the man-made rules that you can only use pastels in summer and dark colors in winter. If that were true, winter wouldn't white, would it?

Also, take a look at the winter weddings board under the 'wedding theme boards" link at the left of the page.

While I don't necessarily believe in rules requiring dark colors in winter and pastels in the summer, I think you should keep the season in mind.

I also am planning a December wedding and our reception site (and to a lesser degree our ceremony site) will already be decorated with Christmas decorations.  Just keep in mind that there may be background colors/decorations that you want to avoid clashing with.

I am doing a very deep purple (eggplant) with cream and gold accents.  I picked those colors because I like them, plus I think they will coordinate with the Christmas colors that will be all over without being too matchy-matchy.  Some brides have played off of the Christams theme and its looked lovely, but I didn't want a red and green wedding.
  • If you're using Christmas colors as a basis, keep in mind that you can find every color scheme under the sun for decorations these days. Simply walking through the Christmas section at Target is evidence of that. You don't have to use the red and green scheme that is found everywhere. If the site is already decorated in those colors, ask if they are open to changing them to your colors because they are readily available anywhere.
