Venue - Requiring Renter to have Personal Liability Insurance.

Hi Everyone!

I found a venue for my ceremony and reception that is just a space -- you have to bring in a caterer, beverage services, ect. Per their contract, they require the cater/beverage provider to hold various insurance policies, but they also require the renter to hold insurance:
  • All renters must provide $500,000 personal liabiliy insurance which must name the venue as addiitionally insured
Has anyone ever heard of to rent a venue? Just looking for some input and advice because my two older sibling have been married and they were not required as a renter to have this insurance.

Thanks!

  • we have to get a one day event insurance policy for our ceremony space, but not our reception space.  We got ahold of our insurance agent and they quoted us at around $100.  From what I understand it basically just covers you if you or any of your guests damage the space or if someone gets injured while there.
  • We had to provide a 1Million dollar policy.   I could either buy the policy through the venue for about $120.00, or do it through my homeowners insurance.  My homeowners insurance provided an addendum to my homeowners policy for the 1 day event, and it cost me $50.00.
  • PS - this is very common when you are just renting a space/hall.  If you are renting a full service venue (with the caterer on site, like a hotel), you don't normally have to provide this.

<div>Thank you! This is very helpful! I appreciate it. </div>
  • It's pretty common, don't let this discourage you against the venue. If you have a home owners insurance policy, you can add a rider to  that, or buy a separate policy for cheap.

it's common for the venue to ask any business who will be on site to provide a cert showing the venue as additional insured. (i'm an underwriter can you tell?).
asking the renter (you) to have it too is not rare. contact your agent. i advise asking about  a policy SEPARATE from your HO or renters policy as, if you have a claim, it will stick to your policy and increase rates for years. if you get a separate event policy for one day that is avoided. if there's a claim there's no reprocussions against your personal policies.
