Place Cards

Are place cards necessary? I don't really understand the point in them. Is it so that people can find which table they are sitting at? My little brother is going to tell people which table they are sitting at as they walk in - I'm thinking this will be just fine & place cards can be marked off my list.

Re: Place Cards

  • Are you having a buffet dinner or sit down plated dinner? If you are having a sit down plated dinner then the place cards are using to tell the wait staff what meal option the guest ordered. If you are doing the buffet, then you dont need these. Unless, you care who sits next to who at the table. If not, toss them!

  • How many people are you having?  If the only way people can know where they sit is by asking your brother, there could be a wait to sit down.  It's pretty easy for you to make a poster with the seating assignments or make escort cards, so I would just do that, and then your brother can help people find their names or point them toward their tables, but he isn't responsible for telling each person where to go.

  • Yeah, I planned on doing the chalkboard seating chart also. I am not having a dinner. Only desserts/coffee/milk/hot chocolate  - i'm having a winter wedding. Thanks Girls!
  • I never know how the assigned seating thing works either, but I know as a guest its frustrating when I go to sit down and someone has their coats purses etc  sitting on an empty chair because they simply want a place for their stuff.  It can be hard to find a seat if its not assigned I think using place cards is a good idea only because of that reason.

I think if you're doing more hoe'r derves ( not sure how to spell it) or things guests could easily walk around with then its not needed.   Congrats and good luck
  • I definitely want assigned seating. I went to a wedding once & it was so awkward to just sit some place. Yeah, no place cards though - waste of money if i'm having the large seating chart!
  • I kind of like the idea of assigned seating.  Otherwise people just sit with the same people they always socialize with.  It seems so fun to think of seeing your high-school friend chatting away with your favorite uncle.  You just have to be sure you put people together you really think would hit it off.

So, I guess my answer would be yes, they are necessary if you're willing to experimet with seating.

Is the dessert being brought out to each guest by a server?  If so, I could understand the assigned seating.  If not, just let people socialize, grab dessert when they want and sit wherever.  It would be similar to a cocktail hour.
