Venue is booked...now what?

I have booked the venue...I want to do lots of DIY projects. What is a project I could get done really early and then store away till the big day?
What should I start doing now that the venue is booked?

Re: Venue is booked...now what?

  • Use the checklist provided here on the Knot, it is really helpful!

After we had our venue booked, I started looking for ideas about colors and flowers and basically what we wanted our reception to be like (afternoon or evening?  dancing or no dancing? things like that).  Start doing that and gathering pictures and ideas before you jump into any DIY projects.  Use your wedding checklist.

  • It depends on what your DIY projects are, really, and how much storage space you have.

I'm making all of our flowers out of paper, I've been at work on it for several months and my wedding's in April.  I'm not going to put the flowers on stems and start to arrange them until closer to the wedding, because they're easier to store at the moment without the stems.

Invitations will be going out in February, so I'm planning on using the week off work I get between Christmas and New Year's to put them together.  If you're DIYing those, you could probably do them pretty early as long as you have someplace safe and dry to keep them.

I'll be making several different desserts for the wedding as well.  I've been experimenting with those for a couple of weeks and will continue to do so.  I'm probably going to start the treats for the actual wedding about ten days out.

Basically, anything that's not going to spoil, melt, fade, or otherwise get destroyed between now and the wedding, you could probably start working on.  Assess each of your DIY projects, figure out how long you think they'll take, double that estimate (trust me) and get started on the ones that will take longest.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I would start booking the other major vendors before starting any DIY projects. 1. because there's more of a time constraint with vendors booking up. and 2. Once you complete a DIY project you have to have some place to store it until your wedding.
  • I would next book the photographer, cake baker, officiant, florist & start looking for decorations. On black friday I bought all my invitations & centerpieces at Michael's, because everything was 25% off.  I'm going to start on the save-the-dates soon.  And it's a good idea to start collecting everyone's addresses.  I had to look up & send messages to a bunch of people I hardly know or haven't even met on facebook (in-laws friends, fiance's friends I haven't met)  They have all these people they want to invite but it's like pulling teeth to get them to get the addresses for me.
