Reception Ideas

First Dance Anxiety

I am not much of  dancer (neither is my fiance). Frankly, the idea of being watched as we dance is the scariest thing about the wedding! How long do we have to dance before other couples join in, and how do people know when it's time to join in? (We won't have a dj; just a string quartet). I know that I can take dance lessons before the wedding, and I may, but it will still be very nerve wracking for me!

I suppose we can't dispense with a first dance altogether?Surprised

  • You don't have to have a first dance.  If neither of you want it, why have it?

OR, walk into the reception and then see if someone can announce that you'd like all other couples to join you FOR your first dance.  The two of you would be on the center of the dance floor but your guests would be surrounding you.

Of course you can. We didn't do dances because we weren't comfortable with them. No one batted an eye.

  • FI and I cant dance and both of us hating being the "center of attention" for something like the first dance, so we probably wont do one unless for some reason he agrees to attempt it and then only take a few steps side to side and turn and say "sorry thats all you get!!" and have the dj change the music to something more crowd drawing. Our family will expect it thats for sure.. lol

Normally the first dance is for the bride and groom only and they dance alone the entire song.  We purposely chose a short song to keep it brief.  But if you're that uncomfortable, I agree, just skip it.

    Ditto.

We intended on doing our whole song, but it started to feel too long, so we signaled to the DJ to stop. My DH was soooooo nervous for the first dance. He was convinced that the whole world would stop to stare at him & say how bad of a dancer he was. When we actually got to do it, he realized that not one person in the audience was looking! Everyone was in their chairs, talking or looking around. He was so shocked...in a happy way. That made him feel so much better. All of that anxiety was for nothing because honestly, the first dance is only for the couple. Absolutely no one else cares.

The First Dance officially opens the dance floor for your guests to feel welcome to dance but it is the most sacred ritual of the reception that symbolizes your unity.  It is your first actions as Husband and Wife and it transforms your vows into action! A few dance  lessons will empower both of you to feel confident and excited about your First Dance and a wedding is the PERFECT excuse to learn a new skill that you can use for a lifetime! A couple that dances together romances together! Surprise your fiance with a dinner and dancing date night and you will find that dance lessons are the most fun you can have planning a wedding! The hardest thing is just walking in the door! :)
