Dessert Reception

Have any of  you ever been to a dessert reception? We have been discussing what we'd want to do. Neither of us are into big and elaborate. Both of us and our families are into desserts.

Re: Dessert Reception

  • I have not been to one but I would expect other non sweet things to nibble on such as veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, maybe throw in an olive bar, so it's not a sweet overload.

Also, make sure this reception in not during meal time.  Maybe have the wedding and reception between 2-5 or after 8pm so nobody will expect dinner.
  • My sister got married in August in city hall at 2:30pm. They did the five minute ceremony then went into a dessert reception with cupcakes, cookies, brownies, water, mini milk cartons, and Jones sodas as the favors. It was very intimate and beautiful.
  • I haven't been to one, but I think it works as long as it's at a non-meal time and you are ok with a shorter reception.  People can only go so long without eating a meal, especially if they're dancing and drinking.

I did recently go to a full evening wedding that had a dessert bar that took up the length of one of the walls of the ballroom they were in.  Caramel apples, pie, truffles, eclairs, cookies, kahlua shots, mini cakes, and so many other things.  We had a dessert buffet at our wedding, too.  There's no reason you cannot have a meal (however formal or informal you want) and then an awesome dessert buffet.
  • it has to be FAR after 8pm. i normally eat dinner at 8pm.
imo the best time is between 2-4pm when people wont expect a meal.
and please, for those of us who dont eat a lot of sugar, put out some savory things as well.

and i agree-get a guy and engaged first :) what if your future fi hates dessert? it's his wedding too.

I have been to one dessert reception. It was an afternoon wedding.  The ceremony started at 2, was over by 2:30, reception was completely over by 4:30.  Dessert receptions are fine as long as you don't plan them around a meal time.  2-5pm or after 8:30pm, in my opinion.  And expect it to be short.  I also agree about adding some savory items. Cheese & crackers, veggie tray, pretzels, etc.  Not everyone wants to go on sugar overload.
  • I"ve been to one and planned one, the ceremony was a late one... then coffee, champange, and a few fingers desserts were served.
It was beautiful, elegant and simple...  Just as she wanted it to be!

Congrats and remember, when it's here, its your choice, your day!
