flower color assistance

Hello:

I am having difficulties selecting flower colors for the bouquets.  My BM dresses are Impressions / DaVinic in Aubergine.  I was thinking of pinks and purples with a small accent of Yellow (to tie in my bouquet of yellow mini calla lillies) but a few of my girls said the purples i like have a blue undertone and the BM dresses have a more reddish undertone.  I guess i never really noticed or thought of that.

One recommended i pick the opposite color on the color wheel??? which is green.  So now i am even more confused.  If you can see the pic below - what flower colors would you recommend? TIA!

Re: flower color assistance

  • I always default to asking a florist what would best compliment the dress.  An experienced florist will be able to give you suggestions and tell you what will be in season around the time of your ceremony.

FWIW, I like the idea of yellow accents in their bouquets and yours.

  • I suggest getting a swatch of that fabric and taking it to your florist, or even the grocery story floral section, so you can put it next to different colors and see what you like.  Ask the florist as well, that's their job!

Also, go to Google Images and do a search for Aubergine weddings and look through all of those pics for ideas.  Do the same for purple and  yellow weddings, to see if you get ideas there.

  • I am not a florist, but do a lot of altar arrangements for our church.  I have come to appreciate purple as an amazing color to work with.  When I have colors that are bland or just aren't working well together, adding some purple almost always seems to tie the colors together or liven it up.

I agree, that with purple dresses, you should probably use yellow and green very sparingly, as a small accent to other colors.  It can easily look garish, or like a Mardi Gras theme.

For a Spring wedding, for the BMs you could do all white or ivory, or the mixed bouquets like you suggested in white, yellow, pink, purple/lavender.

Or you could go with brighter shades of the same colors.  You can use some of the same yellow callas in your bouquet in the BM bouquets for the yellow, only use a hot pink, orange, and a more vivid purple accent.

If you can't find the right shade of purple to go with the BM dresses, try mixing shades of purples to "blend" instead of matching exactly.

  • I would say going asking the florist is a must but if you want purple flowers they should be able to make it work.  Mixing a few shades is a great idea.  Monochromatic color schemes can look great.  Maybe a yellow ribbon to tie in your flowers?
  • The color opposite purple on the color wheel is yellow...
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • thanks for the suggestions.  This is what i came up with for now but i have sent my dress swatch and ideas to two florists.  the dress in the pic looks identical to the color we selected.  we shall see.
