I'm having my wedding at a church and the reception hall that I'm looking at is about 40 minutes away. What is an appropriate distance to expect people to travel ?

I think 40 minutes is much too far to travel.  Your answers here will vary a little bit, but in my opinion I would be annoyed at anything over 20 minutes.

Is there any way you can use a church closer to the reception venue or pick a reception venue that is closer to the church?

  I would not enjoy a 40 mintue drive between, expecially if I had driven a couple hours to get there in the first place.

I could have a closer venue but the 1 I like the best is farther away. What do u think about 30 minutes?

I think 40 minutes is too far.  Once you add in traffic on a busy weekend, you may end up having people on the road for over an hour.     I agree with previous posters.... try to find a church closer to your venue, or if you are a member of a specific church that you really want the ceremony to be held, look for closer venues.
