Checklist of things to look for at a rustic venue

We are going this evening to check out our first choice for our reception; a 1930s park building. It is definitely a more rustic location but does have electricity, bathrooms, and a small catering kitchen.

I am working on a list of things to check into while we are there.

So far I have:

room measurements
of tables and table sizes
and location of windows and doors
parking
kitchen facility; sinks, prep space, refrigeration, cook tops/ovens
bathroom facilities
and location of electrical outlets
floorplan sketch

Any other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks so much, smarties!

  • Since your wedding will be in August, I would check to make sure the facility has air conditioning. If it doesn't, you might have to figure out how to strategically place fans around the room during the reception if you go with this venue.

  • If the building is more than one story make sure that it is easy for guests to get to different floors. Definitely make sure they have AC. Do they have a bar or would you have to outsource a bar/bartender? I am not sure kitchen facilities are that big of a deal. Are you planning on having someone that you know come in a bake/prepare the meal? If you are using a cater they will prepare the food before they arrive to the location. Ask about all services that are included in the contract. We were surpised to find out our price/contract included 2 bartenders, 2 parking attendants and 1 coat check attendant.
  • What are the walking areas like -- sidewalks?  paved?  gravel? dirt paths?  Not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of, in case of rain (which, where I'm from would turn dirt paths into a sea of red clay mud!)
