Do you think orchids are outdated?

As a central wedding flower/theme?  It isn't even in my bouquet but my florist's proposal has them scattered everywhere throughout the reception and ceremony.  I'm going for a  modern look.  Here's a pic of my bouquet, give or take a few flowers.  Your thoughts?

Re: Do you think orchids are outdated?

  • I don't see what makes orchids outdated.  If you were thinking roses everywhere, then sure.  But orchids?  No.  Their entire structure is such that they create a modern look because they're minimal.

From the look of your boquet (which is gorgeous, btw) it seems we might have differeing ideas of what modern is and isn't, so there might be that also.
  • Mother Nature doesn't think so. Flowers cannot be dated since they do not follow the same rules as fashion and other trends. If you love them, use them. It doesn't matter what other people think. If you base your wedding on what other people say is acceptable according to their preferences, then it will not be reflective of you at all, which defeats the purpose.
  • I agree with PP that particular flowers cannot be outdated. I think it's the combination that you put them in that is in "fashion" or the "trend" (your bouquet is fantastic!). Certain flowers can give a particular feeling to your wedding, like red or white roses are traditional, but I think orchids can be modern and fresh or classic and depending on the combination of other flowers involved. Now, if YOU feel that orchids are outdated, or you found yourself disappointed that they were being used, or you are sick of them showing up everywhere, then I would advise you to ask your florist to replace them with a different interesting flower. You need to be happy with your bouquet, and if its your own opinion that they're outdated then they're outdated for this occasion!

    Good luck!
  • ditto pps.  My first thought on reading your post was "How can a flower be outdated?  It's a flower!"  I'd worry less about what you think is "outdated" and think more about what you love.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I guess by outdated I mean overused?  I think orchids are beautiful actually,  I just don't think they match my bouquet style.  Do you think there is another flower in the bouquet that can be better utilized for a navy/pink theme?  I'm thinking the hot pink cala.

She is a highly rated professional and knows what she's doing better than I do, but like you ladies said, a wedding is about personal preference!

So I have two options here: add fuschia or white cymbidium orchids to my bouquet (will that make it look messy - too many flowers?)
    or
Switch the theme flower to something else already in the bouquet.

I guess I can talk to her about both and see what she thinks.
  • Oh, and thanks for the compliments on my bouquet!  I love it too!!!!
  • I spoke with my florist, she's giving me more options!
  • Use whatever you want regardless of what anyone else thinks as their opinions don't matter. Don't let anyone talk you into something that you don't like or that doesn't fit your style.

  • actually, I think cala lillies are far more used these days than orchids.  But it's a flower.  I really don't think that anyone....anyone....will care all that much about whether your flowers are over-used or not.

You're overthinking this.  Use the flowers you want.  Simple.  The end.

  • I think thy style in which the bouquet is gathered can come across as dated.  To me, a cascade is very 90's.  Big and poofy is 80's. Pageant style 60's-70's.  Orchids have short stems and are typically displayed in a cascade, so maybe that is why you think they are dated.  Your florist should be able to put them in a hand tied arrangement if that is more your style.
dont make ur password so easy. gbck2CA2 hahahaha
  • I think one of the reasons florists suggest orchids to be scattered about is because you can pull them off the stem & keep them out of water for long periods of time while other flowers will droop and wilt. And orchids come in such great colors that I'm sure your florist can find some that match your colors.

Your bouquet is fabulous. I love the color combo. Very fun.
  • Outdated No, but they are sure as hell an expensive flower to have everywhere! I'd definitely ask for other options, and if you love your bouquet I wouldn't change it, make your florist work with you on this one.
