Whats a monogram for?

This may seem like a silly question...what exactly are the monograms used for? Is its just another decorating idea to put on things?

Yeah, it's sort of a newer wedding decor fad.  Definitely not something every wedding has or needs.

I painted ours onto our aisle runner and used it on our card box, but that was it.  Pics in bios.

Instead of doing a monogram, we're using ampersands.  It's a bit more graphic-artsy, and fits our style.
