to hold block of rooms, or to not???

Im not sure if I think picking only 2 hotels(or however many) to hold blocks of rooms is best....... Why give your guest that to choose from, what if they dont like those hotels, or want something better....? we decided to put a note in with invitations of a list of hotels in area, that way they can choose whatever they want, and they will have plenty of time to make reservations... what do yall think?

Re: to hold block of rooms, or to not???

  • Usually when you block rooms the hotel will give you a better rate than the commercial price.  It's also nice to know what hotels most people will be staying at if you'd like to be with the crowd.  Lastly, if your wedding is in a busy place (major city, example), it ensures that guests have rooms near your venue to choose from instead of not being able to find anything within a ten mile radius due to bookings for other things going on in the area.

You certainly don't have to block rooms if you don't want to, however.

  • I agree with PP. We are blocking rooms at 2 hotels (both are going to be free of charge, they don't require us to put any money down even if no one books through them!). They are giving us a discounted rate, which is nice for guests. Most of our guests will stay where they want to anyways, but I thought it'd be a nice option to have for them. Plus, one of them is a Marriott so the guests can get reward points for their stay and my parents (Marriott Rewards Members) will also get points. Win-win! I think either way is fine, it really depends on who your guests are, how many will stay, and what their budget is.

  • We're blocking one, but it's really the only hotel that's very close to our venue. There are others a little further away, but that's where we will be staying and it has a bar downstairs if people want to head there after the reception ends.

You are correct on an average night getting rooms might not be an issue.   BUT...

    * your wedding might not be on an average night. There could be a big sporting event, or graduation or city-wide convention that you didn't even think about.  It could be in the middle of peak-tourist season or there is another wedding with a lot of OOT guests.  All those things make getting a room close to your venue(s) harder.

    *  Let's face it, weddings are made of of little groups of family and friends.  More often than not family wants to stay near other family, a group of friends will want to stay near each other.  It's easier to make plans for dinner, lunch, sightseeing or just to get together when everyone is in a central location.

    * a lot of time rooms blocks give you discounts

    * there is no rule that you have to go use the room block.  We had people who stayed other places.  No big deal.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • im blocking rooms at a few hotels :) be easier
  • I agree with others, block rooms. If people don't think they "up to par" to their standards, they can always find a hotel on their own anyhow.

You should estimate how many people you expect to stay in a hotel, if the number is HIGH, give more than one option. If it low, you might want to choose only one because some hotels require a "minimum" amount booked rooms to give extra perks (i.e. free shuttle)....
  • We blocked one hotel, but listed several other options on our website.  The blocked hotel offered a shuttle service, and had a hotel bar.  Everyone wanted to stay at the same place, and they ended up all staying up at the hotel bar all night and hanging out together at the hotel pool the next morning.

I'm sure someone stayed in a different hotel, but I don't know who.
  • I didn't do a block because the hotel required a 80 percent fill or would charge me. I think people can book their own rooms.... We sent save the dates so people could plan.
