Camcorders for guests to film the night and leave well wishes.

I had the idea the other to order a few Flip camcorders to allow our friends and family to film the evening. Have you ever been to a wedding where the bride and groom did something like this? What are your thoughts as a bride?

  • This is a case of different strokes for different folks.

I do not think it's a terrible idea, but as a guest I would never use it because I hate seeing myself on film.  As a bride I would watch them once and that is all.    That's just my personality though.  I've never been a fan of 'home movies' so to speak.  I refused to even have a videographer  at my wedding and do not regret my decision one bit.

You, however, might be the home movies type person and really enjoy them.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Are you having videographer? If so have them take care of this.

  • If you will be disappointed if you don't have video of certain events, hire a videographer.

We didn't have a videographer, but DH's aunt recording our ceremony on her camera (we didn't ask, she just did), which we really appreciated.  DH wished we had video of our reception because the band was so good, but oh well.
  • Do you have any tech-savvy young guests who might be budding film directors?   Maybe you could ask them if they would mind walking around with a camera and recording guests having fun, saying things into the camera, etc.  For example, I have a 17-year-old cousin who loves YouTube and film editing and stuff like that, and she would love to be included in this way.

  • My friend did this but she had one camcorder set up on a tripod outside of the reception hall.  There was a backdrop, and the guest book was nearby.  Guests were encouraged to go make a video-guest-book entry, sing a song, tell a story, or simply say "congratulations".  Her sister's boyfriend volunteered to man the camera, once in a while ask people if they wanted to leave a message.  It worked well, but the sound is kind of crappy, she said she wished they'd moved it to a quieter spot.
  • Thanks for all of your feedback! :-) It was a thought I had and your comments have helped me think it through.
  • I've been getting a lot of emails from this company.  You rent cameras from them, have guests record, and then send back to the company to edit. Haven't looked into prices or anything-
