Paper Lanterns

We are using paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling of the reception space. I have two questions. First, how many lanterns should we use? Is there a general rule of thumb or just trial and error? Second, I've never actually felt the paper of a paper lantern. Is is something that could be painted in any way? I found an awesome deal on white ones, but kind of want them to be my wedding colors. Any ideas? TIA!

Re: Paper Lanterns

  • They have built in lights in them, but I have yet to buy one so i don't know if I could replace the bulb. That's a good idea, I'll have to check into that. And thanks for that link! I guess FI and I will be going back to measure the venue!
  • Try asianimports.com they have all different colored lanterns and all different sizes.

    Try asianideas.com
We are going through the same dilemma right now.
I read that a good rule of thumb is 1 lantern per 28 square feet. You can use clear fishing line, tulle to hang them...or there are a variety of lighted cords you can buy on asianideas.com They have the cheapest lanterns I can find (12-23 of them for $3.15 each or 24+ lanterns for $2.85 each).

Check out the eyelet lanterns as well...they cast really beautiful shadows and look great at weddings!

PS I did an image search on "lanterns" on theknot.com to get some ideas of how to decorate with them. Got some really cool ideas.

  • You can also use paperlaternstore.com. I order a sample of 3 over the weekend and they arrived today, so super quick turn around on a standard ship option. I order 36 more today and the website said they should be here by monday. I paid $1.55 each and there is free shipping with orders over 100. (I didn't spend the hundred but still a great deal)
