Cocktail hour seating

Hi ladies--cocktail hour seating question for you. My wedding will have approx. 175 guests, and my venue only has six cocktail tables. Should I rent more? Or perhaps ask my caterer to also set up a few sets of tables and chairs?

I'm doing just passed hors d'oeuvres, so guests won't need to juggle drinks with plates of appetizers, but my parents were talking about how much they hate weddings with no place to sit at cocktail hour. I guess I've always been so busy chatting during the wedding cocktail hours that I've been to, that I've never really noticed/cared if there is seating, haha :)

What's your take? Is six cocktail tables enough? Do I need some regular tables and chairs there as well?

Re: Cocktail hour seating

  • I'm doing the same style reception but including seating. I am renting various sized tables, both standard and pub-height that seats 2/3rds of the guests, and then additional sofa/lounge furniture for seating outside the main ballroom. I just want people to be comfortable.
  • Based on everyone's feedback, I think I will ask the venue to set up some standard tables and chairs in addition to the six cocktail tables.

@edielaura I can't believe you saw people fighting over chairs once at a wedding cocktail hour! IMO unless you are elderly, pregnant or have a medical condition that prevents you from standing up for awhile, you should suck it up and stand/mingle for an hour! Haha.

Sure, but depending on the wedding that might easily end up encompassing 25% of your guests!
