ring the bells...

does anyone know the meaning of the tradition of ringing bells once the couple leaves the church after the ceremony/or after reception?

i'm not too crazy about birdseed in my hair, or bubbles...but i like the idea of ringing bells - it'd just be nice to know what it means, so we can put this in the program...
