Sparklers!

I would really like to use sparklers instead of rice or petals as we are leaving the reception, I think it would be really cool and I found super long sparklers that burn for 4 minutes. However, my adorably obsessive FI is convinced that these sparklers are death and destruction traps and someone is going to somehow catch me on fire as we leave! I have tried to tell him that the odds of this are unlikely, but he is convinced....has anyone been to a wedding where these were used, or used them at your own?  Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Re: Sparklers!

  • We used them.  PIB.  I was a little nervous, as we had an open bar and people  definitely took advantage of it.  But there were no issues, even with several drunk people.

I've heard of people getting a spark on their dress and getting it singed, but we didn't have any of that.  I didn't intend to sell my dress, so I wouldn't have cared anyway.  Our DOC lined up the people with about 4-5 feet of space in between for us to run through, so maybe that's what kept it safe?  But sparklers are designed to be handled by little kids.  I'm pretty sure it's next to impossible to actually light something on fire with one.
  • If he's really worried about a guest setting your beautiful wedding dress aflame, change before you leave. Have a more casual dress lined up for your "escape outift" (that's what my mom calls my dress for when we leave the reception)
  • We had them for my daughter and son-in-law's wedding.
No  problems whatsoever -- guests had fun and we got wonderful photos!

  • I think it would depend on where you do the exit and the typical weather.  While I know they are normally safe (made for kids, etc.), my friend did this on a wooden dock as she and her new husband walked down the dock to get on a boat for their getaway.  It was super windy as we were at the beach, and at the end of the night people had been drinking and weren't as careful as they could havebeen. Several people got burned due to sparks flying in the wind, and I know my friend's dress got singed in several places.

But if its not normally windy, and if you don't think you will have too many inebriated guests, it does turn out very pretty!
